Hi all. Is it positive, negative, or neutral to loosen drag completely on casting reel during the winter? Some one told me it was good to loosen the drag because having it tight all winter has a negative effect on the reels, is that true? -thanks! (would appreciate any other winter line and reel storage)

When storing for any duration it's good to back the drags off any reel. It prevents compression and sticking.

Oh yeah. You will cause premature wear on the drag components. Actually, you should loosen the drag after every outing.

Yes loosen them. I keep mine loose on all my BC reels until I put a bait on them in the boat. When I put them away I loosen them before they go in the rod locker.

Every outing? Totally unnecessary. Long term, yes back off the drag and spool tension.

I do the exact same thing Jig Man.

Thanks! I was thinking so too. Any tips on storing new spools of line for less memory?

Line won't get any memory in the recycler lol.

Line is going to have some memory no matter what. Spray some KVD Line and Lure on it or just stretch it out some. When it is still on the spool it came on, leave it in a nightstand, bookcase, etc that is out of direct sunlight and extreme temps., and you should be fine.

I always back off the spool tension and the drag before long time storage.
