Jigs

So I've devoted my new year resolution to fish with jigs. I fish tournaments during Spring, Summer, and some in Fall. I always get beat... And the winners are always saying "Caught them on jigs." I'm over there shaking my head... haha so, I wanted to know some good techniques, from some good jig fisherman. Any info would be appreciated!

I'm not a good jig fisherman by any stretch of imagination, but I do fish a lot of jigs. This is what I do. I cast it out, and while it's dropping, watch the line like a hawk (braid). If it doesn't get eaten, hop it back with pauses, or raise and let it fall to the bottom (replicate the cast), or drag it, or do all of them in a cast.

P.S. I put Rage Baby Craws/ Craws on smaller jigs, and Rage Craws/ Lobsters on bigger ones.

Just go out and just fish the jigs and change things up! But most of all leave ALL you other baits at home! Jigs are a big bass bait as well as numbers.

And by the way check out Northstar jigs, they are the best jig out there for me! Good luck!

I just picked up some Northstar jigs and I can't wait to try them out in the spring. I have only heard good things and they look great.

One thing about jigs that doesn't get talked about much is fall rate, I would suggest instead of going and getting a whole bunch of different colors of the same size of jigs, get a whole bunch of different weights of the same 3-4 colors of jigs that work in your area, usually a black and blue, some type of watermelon, and some type of green pumpkin. I find that the fall rate is usually key to getting bit, most of the time fish are hitting the jig on the fall, or directly after the fall. Sometimes they want a slower fall, and some times they want a faster fall. I have actually done better in tougher conditions with a faster fall, you are getting more of a reaction strike at that point. Otherwise my retrieve pretty much mimics Flukes for 75% of my jig fishing, its either the small hops, a sit and soak with shakes, or a slow drag, and occasionally a slow roll along the bottom.

ive hardly used jigs....this makes me wanna! i have a whole storage bin full of different sizes and colors....ive read that 3/8oz is the most commonly used size but i only have one of them lol i have 1/4 oz and 1/2 oz sizes galore.

When- always, anytime, anywhere.

Types-

Football- in wood, rock, shell beds, hard bottom, and deep water.

Arky- Most versatile, by many standards. Wood, rock, weeds, grass, hard bottom, soft bottom, sand, gravel, deep, shallow.

Alien- One of my favorites for wood, heavy soft cover (Not GRASS), hard bottom, chunk-rock, Really excels in wood/brush deep or shallow.

Grass/flip- Grass, swim it, grass, heavy soft cover, light cover, docks, not the best in rock because of the line tie.

Trailers-

Anything as long as it's a Rage Craw/Lobster, Monkey, Rooster, or Hawg. Just ask Roadwarrior and Big-O, they'll tell you, too. (As will many, many, many others.)

In all seriousness, though, it's very rare that I throw anything outside the Rage line as a jig trailer much anymore. When Success comes in 39lbs+ for a tournament bag, I tend to listen to what I've been doing. I've also caught more big fish on a Northstar/Rage combo than anything else for the past couple years.

Really anytime, just like a t-rig, or soft plastic,or anything else. It should be just as much as a staple, if not more so for its versatility

if you actually have a place to fish, i say don't wait til spring!! i catch most of what i catch this time of year on jigs.

i'm with hooligan, the alien/brush/stone jig head is my favorite. i use either a black/blue or green pumpkin for 95% of my jig fishing with a bps twin tail grub for a trailer.

Seriously, I have gone out many many days with a spinning set-up and a couple of 1/4 oz jigs (in case I lose one) with a bag of rage craws this last year. I don't even take a tackle box most of the time; everything I need fits in my pockets. Jigs are one of the most versatile baits out there.

I've forced myself to learn many new techniques. I do this by only taking that one technique with me on the water. You learn quick that way!

I have you agree with you on the Northstar jigs, amazing product... I have beat mine to hell off rocks and they still look great, the paint really holds up.
