Spinning Rod For Cranks And Topwater??

My cousin is looking to get a rod for cranks and topwater baits. Yet he only uses spinning rigs. I know backwards right. Anyways he has a gift card to Cabela's he is wanting to use. I told him I would do some recon. Any help would be appreciated.

I think St. Croix makes one, but I am not 100% shure on it.

You should be able to find a medium/moderate fast spinning rod in 6-6 to 7'. I caught a ton of fish on cranks using that type of rig in the 80s and 90s. Cranks were probably the last thing I switched over to casting gear.

posted this on your post on tackle tour as well, but figured id post it here in case others were looking for a similar rod to yours!

i also only use spinning gear, and went through the search for a crank rod last year, i came across a couple options. (i alsu use braid for cranks, which isnt that uncommon in the walleye world, as it is in the bass world!)

first, the one i wound up getting, a St. Croix Legend Tournament Walleye series 7' MH/mod. this rod is out of priduction as of now, with the introduction of the 2012 legend tourney series, but there should still be some around if you look. (cabela's had them online, but not in store in my area)... this rod is very light and while its rated at 1/4-3/4 oz it has no trouble throwing light baits all the way up to its 3/4 upper end ( i throw #5 berkley flicker shads on it, which are very small lures) there is also a M version of this rod rated for 1/8-3/8 lures. while it was $230 i find it to be worth every penny!

cabelas did have the Falcon Bucoo spinning rod, i think it was the BCS-4-17 model #, which is a 7' M/mod. i didnt buy this rod when i held it in store, because i wanted to see the st. croix first, but it seemed like a nice rod, a bit heavier than the croix, but for $110 thats to be expected.

one that i have found out about since then, and if i ever break my st. croix before the make a new version (THEY BETTER MAKE ONE!) is the Phenix X series, there is, i think, 4 spinning rods in the series, which is made for cranking, there isnt anywhere around me to handle these rods, but the specs on the phenix site have me very intrigued. phenix composite-x blank, nice cork split grip with a fuji reel seat, fuji alconites, $50 no-hassle replacement, along with the lifetime warranty, and the ability to upgrade (pretty much the same as st. croix's warranty, VERY nice!) and a $199 price tag.

the other option is to go with something like a medium-light/fast rod, should be soft enough to not tear the hooks out on a crank, but they are usually rated for too light of lures for my taste.

Look at the Shimano Teramar Inshore Rod. They run about 100.00.

I use a 7ft Med/ Fast for top water only with a 3000 series reel and 30# braid.

I think the feel and action of that rod is ideal for top water duty.

Another great option is the St Croix Eye-Con. They've got just what you're looking for for not a lot of money.

American Legacy Fishing Company has a couple Shimano Crucial crankbait spinning rods left at 30% off (the old models with the cork grips). They have a 7' ML and a 7'4" M left. I've never used the spinning models but I have a 7' M in the old model that I love for 1/2oz lipless baits and just about anything that dives less than 10 ft. I've also got a 7' MH/MF Crankbait and a 6'8" M/MF Topwater in the new models that should be here tomorrow. Awesome cranking sticks.

Cabelas has the Xml Walleye series rod model# XMLWS704-1 7' M/MF 1/4-5/8 which might work well.
