thetank86 Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 I just bought my first baitcaster and i'm not sure if i bought the right reel. I bought the shimano corudo 301E (CU301e). I jumped into buying it cause i received a gift card. i bought a shimano clarus bass casting rod its 6'8" M action lure wieght 1/4 oz to 3/4 oz. i have 2 question. 1 is this a good setup 2 did i buy the right reel and or rod. i fish alot from shore and sometimes on a boat. Super User deep Posted December 30, 2011 Super User Posted December 30, 2011 It's a swimbait reel. Matched with the right rod, it can throw anything from Matt's hardgills to 6" hudds a looooong way. Heck, some guys throw 8" hudds on it too.. For traditional bass fishing, you might want to get another reel.. Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted December 30, 2011 Super User Posted December 30, 2011 Great stuff! The reel is very large for the rod though. Most of us would have gotten the 50 or the 200 instead of the 300. Quote
Super User tomustang Posted December 30, 2011 Super User Posted December 30, 2011 Well the 301E is a great reel, but not for what you'd probably want to do, it's good for bigger baits and heavier line. I started baitcasting with one on a MH since I got it half off and did fine with it, but the 200 size is more suited for medium rods. Quote
B@ssCrzy Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 I am guessing that the 300 series will work for you, but I would have bought the 201e for that kind of rod. The 300 e series is more used for bigger weights, applications like swimbaits, where you are throwing heavy stuff. I own 2 of the 200 series and they do fine for any of the bass/fishing applications that I use. I love my 200 e series reels. I just picked up my second one this week b/c I liked it so much last summer, and have heard not the best reviews about the new G series. Unless you plan on using swimbaits, trolling with heavier rod, or doing some saltwater fishing the 200 series would be my choice. Don't know where your gift card was to, but on-line I bought both of mine for $133 from ohya.com w/ free shipping. Quote
thetank86 Posted December 30, 2011 Author Posted December 30, 2011 Thanks you guys. So i'm going to return it which one should i buy. i mainly use plastics, cranks, jigs and spinners. so what should i get CU51E or CU201E7? Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 The 300 size has more line capacity, maybe a little overkill but definetely not a make or break. You won't be hurting yourself if you keep it. Especially if you fish for salmon, steelhead, catfish, musky etc. The 201E7s probably a few bucks cheaper and probably the more traditional all around bass reel. Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted December 30, 2011 Super User Posted December 30, 2011 That 300 size is a great crankbait reel. I wish I had one. It will handle 3/8 ounce cranks and up. I wouldn't count on much distance if you're throwing something like a balsa Shad Rap. Put some 10 lb line on it and with that line capacity you'll be able to break off a dozen times or more before you'll have to respool.. Put some 17 or so on it and you've got a great square bill reel. I'd take it off your hands, but I'm a lefty and I don't do left hand crank reels. Quote
Jaheff Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 I only use my 300e around three times a year. Like Fat G likes the 50e way better than the feel of the 200e, I think the 300e has a way better feel then my 200e. Too bad it's just too big for every day use. Quote
B@ssCrzy Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 I have not tried out the 51e, but I can cast 1/4 oz cranks ok with the 200. For me if I am going to go lower than 1/4 I am going to want to use a spinning reel anyway. The more I use the reel the better I get at throwing them, but anything less than 1/4 would be tough. Some of that though may have to do with how I have the breaks set up. I would say that you probably don't want to go any lower than 1/4 oz. I mainly throw senkos, curly tail worms, spinners, stanley ribbits with ribbit hooks (weighted), fat ikas, crankbaits, x-raps, rapala dt and it works great for all of them. Hope this helps. Quote
scbassin Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 Either the 51E or the 201E will work just fine. I think the 200 series holds a little more line. Quote
Northern Strain Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 201e is a little more versatile than the 51e, the 51e is perfect if you want to throw alot of things under 1/4oz Quote
baluga Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 The 50 performs better than the 200 model. Quote
Packard Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 The 50 performs better than the 200 model. Depends on the application. 1 Quote
thetank86 Posted December 30, 2011 Author Posted December 30, 2011 I just looked up the 200 to buy it and i noticed they have a new 200g has anyone used the g series yet? Quote
thetank86 Posted December 30, 2011 Author Posted December 30, 2011 Thank you guys alot for all the help i didnt realize i was going to get so much advise so fast Quote
Packard Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 I just looked up the 200 to buy it and i noticed they have a new 200g has anyone used the g series yet? 200G is more expensive than the older E series and isn't better. You can find the 50e and 200e for less than $130 almost everywhere. Quote
Northern Strain Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 The 200e is more like the Chronarch E that is out right now, they are not completely the same but similar. The Curado G has less bearings than the E and was made more affordable. It really doesn't matter what you buy, a CU201e7 CU201g or a Chronarch201e7, they are all Shimano and will all work well. The CU201e7 is the best bang for your buck though because you can probably find some nice deals where it is around $120. Quote
baluga Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 Depends on the application. ah.. I should be more specific for you.. The 50e cast better and retrieve smoother. Quote

thetank86 Posted December 30, 2011 Author Posted December 30, 2011 Just want to let everyone no i went with the 51e. If someone want the 301e for$200. The place wants to charge me 10% restock fee when im not even going open the box. Quote
Super User tomustang Posted December 31, 2011 Super User Posted December 31, 2011 Since you are starting out, save it if you have the means. No reason to drop such a good reel when you might expand your experiences. Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted December 31, 2011 Super User Posted December 31, 2011 I would hang on to the 301...makes a killer swimbait reel... Quote
Packard Posted December 31, 2011 Posted December 31, 2011 ah.. I should be more specific for you.. The 50e cast better and retrieve smoother. ah... I see that you had to edit your post. I got your original in my email's inbox. "I'm not sure what application are you talking about but the only advantage of 200 series is the capacity. I just loaded my 50e with 20# Ohero braid and it has the same cap as my CU 200e with 20# Sufix 832. I use them both for casting jerk bait and small swimbait weight 1/4 oz to 3/4 oz. The 50e cast better and retrieve smoother." 200e is better for heavy duty applications. 200e comes in two ratios, good luck deep cranking with the 50e. The 200e7 is easier to flip, pitch, and punch with. The 200e is better for light swimbaits because you won't spool yourself like the 50e. Now I am not saying one is better than the other but each has its time and place and for you to say the 50e is so much better is blasphemy. 1 Quote
