nwibass Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 I'm going to be using the reel I choose on an 8' carrot stix gold for alabama rigging and punching. I've been looking at these reels and I want to get a 7.1 ratio because I might be doing some punching and deep ledge jigging with it. I'm leaning toward the revo premier. Remember I'm going to be throwing a 2-5 OZ. A-Rig with this reel so what do you guys think? -thanks! Quote

Seems a little counter productive to throw that heavy of a bait (A-Rig) with that much drag with a low torque high speed reel. With that said, I own all of the reels you mentioned above minus the EXO, and if I had to choose one to throw it on it would be the Premier based soley on the amount of drag the Revo produces. Quote

Haven't fished one yet, but I can't imagine the A-rig has that much pull. In musky fishing a 2 oz lure has WAY, WAY more pull then even some 15oz lures. (double 10/13 blades vs soft plastic Bulldawg) I suppose that it would depend on what type of baits you were attaching to it, in my opinion this rig seems like it would be better thrown on something with a little more torque. And if he is fishing heavy cover with his jigs the drag is a bonus also. Anyway your point is well taken. Quote
nwibass Posted December 29, 2011 Author Posted December 29, 2011 The reason I'd like to get a 7.1 ratio on the revo is because I'll be using the rod for mainly a-rig, but also some punching, I want the 7.1 for added versatility. I fished the A-rig and the pull is that of a 20+ diving crank with a huge bill on it. I think i may settle for the premier in 6.4:1 ratio for a little more power. Quote
nwibass Posted December 29, 2011 Author Posted December 29, 2011 I'll be ataching 1/8-1/4 oz jig head with 3.5"-4.5" soft swimbaits(shadalicious) (5 of each). Quote

I think that you will not give up much with the more moderate speed reel and will gain a little in torque. This is a good choice in my opinion. Quote

Ya, if it pulls that hard for you, I would drop to lower numerical gears also. Quote
nwibass Posted December 29, 2011 Author Posted December 29, 2011 The thing is I can't punch with any lower than the 6.1 model, so I think I'm going to get that model. Thanks for the replies guys. Quote
bigbassctchr101 Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 I tried using a slower geared reel for the A-rig..E5. Works nice if your throwin in 10-20ft all day. But if your throwin around points/rocks/stumps, etc... you have to reel too fast to keep the rig off the bottom. I'm now using the E7 and think its MUCH better. My opinion on the drag-pull of the bait is its just pure weight, not really a resistance type of drag. So it may feel like pullin a deep diver, but the force on the reel doesn't seem to be nearly as bad. I'd rather have a 7.1:1 reel to punch and flip with too. I dont think the low geared winch effect is needed much, even when dragging in grass. Quote

nwibass Posted December 29, 2011 Author Posted December 29, 2011 Just ordered the Revo Premier in the 7.1:1 ratio!! Quote
s13john Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 i think your going to kill that premier pretty quick throwing 2oz+ lures, i would be looking at a 300 400 calcutta, pluton or a 300 curado. i just dont think that revo has the line capacity using 20+ mono or 65+ braid. this guy has a lot of good points on the a rig topic Quote
nwibass Posted December 30, 2011 Author Posted December 30, 2011 Revo clutches are tuff I was thinking of a Curado 300 but i also need it for punching. I hope the premier lasts Quote

Quote
s13john Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 very true punching can be more difficult. I bit onto the swimbait bandwagon and what i found is that it is really hard to find a flip/punch rod that will be and ideal swimbait rod and vice versa. Quote
nwibass Posted December 30, 2011 Author Posted December 30, 2011 http://www.***.com/E21_21_Carrot_Gold_Stix_Casting_Rods/descpage-E21GCC.html thats the rod i bought in 8' X X heavy action, carrots are known to have stiffer actions, but I'm hoping its not to stiff to punch with. Should work well with the a-rig and larger swimbaits(huddlestons, etc). And going to pair with my new revo or a curado. Quote
nwibass Posted December 30, 2011 Author Posted December 30, 2011 the 3 little "***" stars up there it's *** Quote
nwibass Posted December 30, 2011 Author Posted December 30, 2011 8' X X heavy carrot stix gold in casting rods 99$ for the applications i specified Quote
Packard Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 I think you made a good choice with the carrot stix. I actually enjoy using mine. I have heard a lot of stories of them breaking though. Quote
nwibass Posted December 30, 2011 Author Posted December 30, 2011 I have the PG and it's fine, I also "heard" that they fixed that problem summer of 2011. I've also made the decision that I'm going to pair it up with a Curado 200e7. Quote
Super User BASSclary Posted December 30, 2011 Super User Posted December 30, 2011 More waffling than Brett Favre in this thread! Quote
