pussiwillow Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 hello. im hoping someone knows what size boca orange seal bearings bps pro qualifier and johnny morris carbon black reels take for the spool bearings, thanks in advance Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 Does that model have a bearing on the spool itself? if so, the kit contains a 3x10x4 & 5x11x4. This is how other JM models are configured. I believe the PQ is 2 - 3x10x4 measuring is best to be safe. IDxODxW. I can sell them to you 10% off retail and install as part of a cleaning as well. My advice would be to have a reel cleaned prior to upgrading bearings to see if bearings are needed and to get the full benefit. Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted December 29, 2011 Super User Posted December 29, 2011 DVT - those are the sizes. As measured on my PQs (and CLs for that matter), there's a 3x10x4 on the palm-side plate and a 5x11x4 pinned on the spool shaft. There's another 3x10x4 under the cast control cap that supports the very end of the spool shaft but don't know if that one is typically replaced during a bearing upgrade. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 Goose, thanks for the confirmation. I don't usually replace the crank side bearing unless the reel uses a solid 1 piece spool shaft. Quote
pussiwillow Posted December 31, 2011 Author Posted December 31, 2011 hey thanks guys, these reels have only been used a few times and they are for light to medium weighted baits, i would just like to get my spool running a little faster to lob those baits further, thats what the boca's would do for me right? i know there smoother and not much difference for heavy baits since the spool with be pegged either way, but for light baits i here they will help with castability and what not, thats all im really looking into, DVT & Goose thanks for the responses Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted December 31, 2011 Posted December 31, 2011 Easier casting helps with accuracy with the heavier baits too due to the less effort needed. The spool mass plays a role in how light a bait the reel thows well too. A deep cleaning and proper lube may be all you need and possibly a Super Tune on anything with a one piece spool shaft. We could do one and see what you think and do the others later. Just dropping bearings into an otherwise untouched reel will limit the results. Quote
ClackerBuzz Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 I was talking with a guy the other day about upgrading the spool bearing in my pro qualifier reels also. He said the gear box is compatible with Revo's, which can be bought on sale for $25. After the two mod's he said you basically have a revo for $110. Do you know if the gears are interchangeable DVT? tks Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 The PQ comes in 5 different gear ratios. You simply order the gearset from them. No need to try to fit revo parts. While the BPS reels share a fair amount of tooling and design feature with Pure Fishing (Revo, Pflueger..)there are differences in materials and some tolerances etc. If you want a Revo, buy a Revo. The PQ is a fine reel and good value at the price point. My suggestion would be to flush and lube the stock bearings in the PQ, put the bearing and gear set money in a pool and buy an other PQ in the ratio you want when they go on sale. Quote
l3rd Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 hello. im hoping someone knows what size boca orange seal bearings bps pro qualifier and johnny morris carbon black reels take for the spool bearings, thanks in advance I am not familure with the PQ, but I do have several CarbonLites. I changed out the bearings in one of them with the better Boccas, 7 I believe, and no change. The bearings in the CarbonLite are first rate. The PQ may, or may not be as good, caveat emptor (buyer beware). You may be spending a lot of money for nothing. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 I agree taht the PQ comes with decent bearings but if you saw no difference between stock and the bearings in question which are the Orange Seal ceramic hybrids, something is off. First off, I almost always run them open. The seals are meant to be non-contact but that's not always the case just due to handling. I also test and clean every bearing before installation. Regardless of brand or rating you get a dud every once in a while. With this said, the advantage gained at the end of the day will vary depending on the individual reel and the users casting. Quote
ClackerBuzz Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 thanks DVT. i just cleaned out two of my PQ. it was a fun experience. I'm going to flush the bearings next week. (planning on soaking them in a jar of acetone overnight and giving them a few good spinnings in between). i would love to save money by turning one into a burner so i'm going to order 7:1 gears from BPS. i've always had a drag issue with them. i have to tighten the drag down virtually all the way to get it set for heavy cover (I've literally gotten into the habit of undialing my drag after each outing b/c it is dialed down so hard.). i know reels come with alot of grease from the factory so i was hoping the issue would be resolved when i cleaned them. it didn't help and now its worse. i only applied a thin layer of grease to the drag washer but the drag no longer works. should i clean more of the grease off the drag washers? or maybe replace/upgrade the washers? Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 What did you grease the drag with? If it wasn't specially formulated drag grease like Cals or Shimano's, that's part of the problem. I think the Revo stx kit fits that reel but if you want to measure I'll confirm. I have them in stock if you want a kit. Also check the spring washers on the crank shaft. They should be oriented facing each other like so: () Quote

I would like to change them out on all my PQ's so I'll need 4 sets. I did make sure the spring washers are oriented. Let me know if you have any other recommendations. Thanks DVT! Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 OK. Just double check that the grease says Drag Grease on the container. The Carbontex drag can be run dry for raw power or lightly greased for smooth activation. Quote
l3rd Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 hello. im hoping someone knows what size boca orange seal bearings bps pro qualifier and johnny morris carbon black reels take for the spool bearings, thanks in advance I can't speak to these reels, but I did try Boca ABEC#7 bearings in one of my Carbonlites. I have 4, and I could not tell you which one has them without tearing them open. The stock bearings in at least the Carbonlites are pretty awesome bearings... That may or may not be true of other BPS reels, but I'd buy a set for ONE, and see if there is a real difference. You need to clean and LIGHTLY lube the one you want to compare it to of course. The Boca's come unlubed, so just lube them the same as the one you are going to compare it to. YMMV... Quote

I'll send you a PM now to see if you have them in the Carbontex. Thks! Quote
