Super User BASSclary Posted December 29, 2011 Super User Posted December 29, 2011 Well i'm getting a great deal on 1 of 3 rods from a friend, and wanted to know what you guys think would best fit my arsenal. I currently have a St.Croix Avid 7'MH/F; Powell Max 6'8" M/XF and a BPS MH/XF, but ignore it's rating, it fishes nothing like it. It makes a very nice crankbait rod for uses, mostly shallow cranks. I can add a Powell Edurance for a great price and have to choose from these three. 6'7" H/XF 12-20 Lb 1/4-1 ounce rating; 6'7" MH/XF 10-17lb 1/4-3/4 ounce rating; or 6'9" H/F 12-20 lb 1/4-1 ounce rating. RIght now I use my Avid for jigs/plastics/spinnerbaits and my Powell for light plastics and jerkbaits, while my BPS gets the call for shallow cranks and lipless cranks. I fish the Potomac alot and it gets quite weedy in the summer. I was thinking the 6'9" for flippin/pitching/puching but am worried it may be a bit too short and not very sure on the fast tip instead of extra fast. I'm also thinking maybe the 6'7" MH/XF for a good spinnerbait (1/4-3/4ounce weight) rod, but I dont fish them as much as jigs or plastics, they're my third most used bait. But then again for flippin/pitching/puntching, do I sacrifice more length for a XF tip? These are the only 3 I have to choose from, so please don't suggest me another rod. And the deal is just to good to wait for something else. Thanks! I'm also open to moving techniques to different rods if it plays out right with the new rod. Quote
Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted December 29, 2011 Super User Posted December 29, 2011 6'7" MH, I'd use it for bigger cranks, and medium sized jigs. If he wants to get rid of another one lettme know, those are one of my alltime favorite rods. Quote
Fat-G Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 This is from my personal experience, but I wouldn't get any of them. I've made compromises many times with fishing tackle, and always regret it later on. If you don't think you'll like it or have a good use for it, don't buy it, even if it's a smokin deal. Use your Avid for jigs and plastics, the Powell for cranks and spinnerbaits, then save up one or two more paychecks and get a rod you really want. But seriously, don't settle for something less than exactly what you want. It's more expensive to buy a rod, use it and decide you don't like it, sell it and pay for a rod tube and shipping, then take the hit for however much money you lost than it is to buy the exact rod you want. I went through three rods looking for the perfect rod for me before I said f*** it and bought what I really wanted. I would recommend getting a rod that is 7'3" minimum for any sort of flipping or punching. I prefer rods over 7'8 personally. A long, powerful rod can be used for a lot of techniques, too. Flipping, pitching, punching, frogs, heavy spinnerbaits, swimbaits, heavy plastics, and jigs. That's just naming a few. I'm using a 7'4 rod for jigs and plastics and sometimes it feels too short... For me a Mag-Heavy rod with 20# flouro or 60# braid is an all-around setup. I can do everything I need to do plus throw a squarebill, lipless crank, or spinnerbait if I need to. Just use your thumb as the drag. Your Avid can do everything you need it to - it may not be perfect for all of them, but that's where your two other rods come in. Quote

Those look like the 3 Endurances that TW has on sale for $109.88 each... I'm not too fond of short rods either. Save 50 odd bucks more, and get whatever Powell you really like. It's not difficult. I saved a dollar here, and a dollar there over the last 3 months, and finally had enough to buy myself a dedicated casting jig rod. Quote

I was going to just save it and wait for a rod that I really want, but 115 is all I have to buy something fishing related for the next ~5 months, where all my money will end up going to Lacrosse (League fees, bleh) and insurance, and other stuff I have to take care of. So I can't exactly just save it up. And I only really want need 2 more rods anyway before next year. I think I might go with the 6'7" MH/XF for spinnerbaits, because they will work well for me this spring. I wont be doing any serious pitching or punching until 6 months from now, and by then i'll have a disposable income, so I can buy a serious flippin stick then. I really want to try out a Dobyns Champion or Extreme, or other high dollar rod. After those two, i see no more need for anymore rods. Quote
Super User webertime Posted December 30, 2011 Super User Posted December 30, 2011 Just a thought... Get a 6'9" MH and a 7'3" H Daiwa Smallmouth VIP and use them for few months then flip them (if you want) when your "fish-posible" income returns to normal. They are really nice rods, for $50 each with the Lifetime Warranty... they are plain crazy deals. You have your Flipping stick and a Spinnerbait rod. I have a Spinning rod from this series and I love it. http://www.daiwa.com/rod/detail.aspx?id=254 Quote
