Super User Goose52 Posted December 28, 2011 Super User Posted December 28, 2011 Water is still soft here - surface water temp is a whopping 44 degrees. I think Paul put one of his Tennessee river bass in my little lake up on the plateau. 23" - 6.54 pounds. Still catchin' on my trusty lipless cranks. Lakes were frozen here last year at this time. I'm still jazzed... Down the hatch - plenty of room for a 1/2oz RES! Only one treble point was just barely hooked between the gills, well behind the tongue - no blood loss. 1 Quote
Super User Jigfishn10 Posted December 29, 2011 Super User Posted December 29, 2011 Nice fish Goose52, did you use a fast retrieve or a yo-yo type of retrieve? We still have soft water here, I may try and get out on New Years. Congrats on your outing. Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted December 29, 2011 Author Super User Posted December 29, 2011 Nice fish Goose52, did you use a fast retrieve or a yo-yo type of retrieve? Cast out, count-down to depth, bring it across the top of the grass as slow as possible, random rod twitches to change the vibration of the bait. Quote
Big-O Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 You're counting it down all right, counting down the final days to year end while putting the SMACK DOWN on the HAWGS, LOL. Beautiful fish! www.ragetail.com Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted December 29, 2011 Author Super User Posted December 29, 2011 Big-O you crack me up - THANKS ! Quote
bassman31783 Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 Beautiful bass. Those pink lips reminds me of the topic you started about a year ago about what causes it. The one I caught a few days ago also had pink lips (at least as pink as they'll get here in Texas). Did we ever end up with an answer as to what causes it? Great catch. Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted December 29, 2011 Author Super User Posted December 29, 2011 I remember one thread started by Paul Roberts on the red lips condition. I just found it "Red Teeth" - 7 pages of comments. Only consensus was that it's most likely caused by the cold water. Other theories were inflamed due to exertion in the fight, hormonal/prespawn, and from eating craws. Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted December 29, 2011 Super User Posted December 29, 2011 WTG goose. With only three days left for 2011 that makes a nice linker to finish the year. Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted December 29, 2011 Author Super User Posted December 29, 2011 Thanks Dwight ! If this is my last fish for the year, it is indeed a good way to finish. However, I've got three days left to try for another biggun! STILL no ice or snow in the 10-day forecast. The bite is VERY slow, especially since I'm still using a moving bait, but lately when I DO get bit, it's usually a nice fish. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted December 29, 2011 Super User Posted December 29, 2011 Nice fish! BTW, Is that your favorite color lure? Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted December 29, 2011 Author Super User Posted December 29, 2011 Thanks RW ! On color, I usually use a "natural" color in clear water / sunny days - for a RES - it is usually "Ghost Minnow." In murky water and/or cloudy/rainy days, I usually use something brighter - could be a chrome or something like Sexy Shad or Chartreuse Baitfish (RES colors) or whatever. Right now, I'm running a little experiment. I bought one of the 12-packs (12 different colors) of RES from BPS for $39.xx. I fish a different color every day. So far, it seems all the colors are working. I usually don't fish craw-colored lipless cranks, but they're getting bit just as well as anything else I guess. Perhaps I would have got a few more fish with certain colors but I'm not sure. I'm only catching fish in the evening during that magic time just before and after sundown when the fish have the feedbag on - I could be wrong but I think any color might get bit. The 5.7 pounder I got a few days ago was on a sexy shad color RES and I've caught quality fish on several other colors in the past couple weeks as well. Having said all that, I might leave this craw-colored RES on the line for a while and see if it does any more hog-calling ! Quote
Fat-G Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 Nice fish Goose! Lipless cranks catch a lot of 5-7 lb. fish for me as well...and I can't explain why. I think only two colors are really needed: Some variation of Sexy Shad and a natural craw pattern. SK just added a lot of new colors as well. If they sold them with a better quality hook, I would load up! Quote
Fat-G Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 Not to hijack, but I think we're right about the cold-weather red toungue. December, mid 40's: October, mid 60's: Quote

hookset on 3 Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 Goose, they say you can tell if your on the right color lure by the way the bass is hooked... That Hawg absolutely choked that craw pattern! Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted December 30, 2011 Author Super User Posted December 30, 2011 great going buddy. that is a good 'un for sure. gotta love those rattlebaits. Thanks Paul. I still think you put some of your fish in my lake Goose, they say you can tell if your on the right color lure by the way the bass is hooked... That Hawg absolutely choked that craw pattern! Yeah - she sucked it right down...far enough for the line just above the bait to be frayed from rubbing across the jaws. I try to make myself retie frequently, especially after a larger fish. When I caught this fish, the air temp was 33 with a lot of wind and my fingers were stinging pretty bad. So, I was gonna get lazy and not retie the knot and just get back to fishing. Then, I thought...at least do a little pull test on the line - grabbed the RES, put some tension on the line................and snap! Then I trimmed back the line a bit and tied a new knot... Quote
Packard Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 Nice fish! Were starting to get hard water up here now. I'm actually excited that I will get to ice fish soon because for the last few weeks it's been too cold to fish normally. Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted December 30, 2011 Author Super User Posted December 30, 2011 .........I might leave this craw-colored RES on the line for a while and see if it does any more hog-calling ! Yup - the craw patern RES called another hawg in 45 degree water! 22" / 6.04lbs. Supposed to get down to 19deg Monday night and be subfreezing all day Tuesday so the water temp might go down a few degrees...BUT, still no snow or ice in the forecast for the next 10 days Still the red on the lips and throat. A nice fish - plump for the length. 1 Quote
Super User Jigfishn10 Posted December 30, 2011 Super User Posted December 30, 2011 Man, you're on em alright! Congrats on your outing...AGAIN! Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted December 30, 2011 Author Super User Posted December 30, 2011 Nice fish! Were starting to get hard water up here now. I'm actually excited that I will get to ice fish soon because for the last few weeks it's been too cold to fish normally. I'm jazzed with the soft water. The problem here is that when the lakes DO freeze, the ice never gets thick enough for ice fishing so you just have to shut down... Man, you're on em alright! Congrats on your outing...AGAIN! Thanks. It wasn't really a planned outing - I was coming home from the shooting range today and when I passed the lake I saw an on-shore wind with lots of clouds coming in - Pre-Frontal ! So, since I had a rod in the car, I stopped to cast for a bit. Took about 15 minutes to "lure" this ole girl in ! Quote
