jchez444 Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 I mainly fish baitcasters and have eventually gotten my equipment the way i wanted it. meaning qualitly rods and reels. However towards a spinning outfit preferrbly one geared towards shakey head fishing, where do you need to put your money towards. a rod for feel or since your using light line you need a reel with a good drag system?? im in the market for a good spinning outfit and looking to spend total $300 and seem to be caught inbetween on where to put the most of my money and trying to get the best bang for my buck. Super User OkobojiEagle Posted December 27, 2011 Super User Posted December 27, 2011 Find the best balanced spinning rod you can afford, then learn how to backreel. oe Quote
northern basser Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 I'd get a cabelas XMLti rod (on sale for $119) and put one of the new white stradics on it($179). Very nice combo. Quote
JIGFISHERMAN. Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 Cut costs on the reel. No doubt about it. Pflueger President, or even look for a used Supreme, and then put the $$$$$ into the rod. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted December 27, 2011 Super User Posted December 27, 2011 I'd have no problem putting a $50 reel on a $250 rod. Quote
Super User Marty Posted December 28, 2011 Super User Posted December 28, 2011 I'd have no problem putting a $50 reel on a $250 rod. To paraphrase, I have no problem with a $50 reel on a $50 rod. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted December 28, 2011 Super User Posted December 28, 2011 That too. I don't own any $250 spinning rods, lol. I was just using the balance of the OP's budget. Quote
northern basser Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 I like to have nicer reels, but would still do 60% rod and 40% reel. Give or take a few dollars. Quote
Bass Junkie Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 Go with a Duckett and a Quantum Catalyst PTiC Spinning Reel. Sharp looking combo and the rod is an amazing piece of equipment. Quote
Super User Team9nine Posted December 28, 2011 Super User Posted December 28, 2011 I'd have no problem putting a $50 reel on a $250 rod. X2 I like to have nicer reels, but would still do 60% rod and 40% reel. Give or take a few dollars. That said, if I had to break it down in percentages, northern basser has the approx. mix I would follow. You shouldn't have any problem getting a solid setup with a $300 budget, with the $$ weighted toward the rod purchase in some degree. -T9 Quote
Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted December 28, 2011 Super User Posted December 28, 2011 Cut costs on the reel. No doubt about it. Pflueger President, or even look for a used Supreme, and then put the $$$$$ into the rod. X2 on the Pres get a better rod with the rest. Iv had a Pres on my Avid Quote
ChiCityBasser Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 I'd get a cabelas XMLti rod (on sale for $119) I have the 6'9" model of the XMLTi and it's a great rod at a great price. Very sensitve and I use it as a weightless plastics rod with fat ikas and senkos. Just adding a 7' M/F casting model I like it so much and still for the $119 price. Quote
jchez444 Posted December 28, 2011 Author Posted December 28, 2011 i think with the reel i am going to go with the Pflueger supreme MGX for $100. so that leaves me with $200-$220 for the rod. so far on a quick look i am eyeing up the powell 703, duckett 7ft med/fast, gloomis 822 shakeyhead rod for $220 and a denail rosewood shakeyhead Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted December 28, 2011 Super User Posted December 28, 2011 I have been very impressed with the Pinnacle baitcasting rig I acquired last fall: http://www.bassresou...-dhc5-701camcb/ One of these will be my next spinning rod: http://www.bassresou...lake-champlain/ Quote
Super User J Francho Posted December 28, 2011 Super User Posted December 28, 2011 I have the Pinnacle DHC5-681SPM Tube-Grub-Finesse rod with the Performa XT. $90 reel on a $150 rod...pretty sweet set up. handles big fish, too. Quote

Dave T. Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 For $300 you can get an awfully nice spinning outfit. You could pick up a Shimano Crucial or a St. Croix Avid somewhere between $150 to $180. That leaves you $120 to $150 for a reel... plenty of great reels in that price range, and you won't be sacrificing with either. Quote
38 Super Fan Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 TW still has a Falcon Wendlandt Shakey Head Rod on sale 50% off. Quote
jchez444 Posted December 29, 2011 Author Posted December 29, 2011 I picked up the falcon Clark Wendlandt shakey head rod. i dont know to much about it and kinda got it on a whimm so we will see if i made a good choice.lol. now i just gotta decide which reel to put on it. Quote

They are as nice of rods as I have owned, including Loomis's. I also like the fact of the ring lock guides on them. Quote
jignfule Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 X2 on the Pres get a better rod with the rest. Iv had a Pres on my Avid President is a good reel for the money Quote

If you want to spend all of your money then I suggest a Shimano Stradic or Daiwa Fuego-A. But you can definitely get away with a Shimano Saros and have extra money to spend on tackle. Quote
jchez444 Posted December 30, 2011 Author Posted December 30, 2011 Well i finally made my choices and so far im pleased with the looks and feel. I got the Clark wendlandt shakey head rod for 50% off so it only cost my $100bucks. Now i love the look and feel, very light but have not tested it on the water. For the reel i was between the stradic 2500, saros 2500 and the ci4. now i was planning to get the CI4, which was super light but honestly a little rough when reeling. You would think for $200 it will be smooth when reeling but it wasnt and i was not to happy about the reel handle. The Saros 2500 felt ok but wasnt "in love" with it. The stradic FJ was alittle heavier then the others but was super smooth and when reeling you can sense that it is a very powerful reel. so long story short i got the stradic fj, which so far with non water use i am very happy.
