Super User BASSclary Posted December 27, 2011 Super User Posted December 27, 2011 When it comes to the lighter lures, about 1/4 ounce total, which will do better? Quote
Super User J Francho Posted December 27, 2011 Super User Posted December 27, 2011 Out of the box, Sol. Quote
Super User BASSclary Posted December 27, 2011 Author Super User Posted December 27, 2011 Thanks J. What about after a clean and lube, including a flush and relube of bearings? Quote
Super User tomustang Posted December 27, 2011 Super User Posted December 27, 2011 For a 1/4oz, the 200 does great, not even including a 50. Could just be my style of throwing.... Quote
Super User J Francho Posted December 27, 2011 Super User Posted December 27, 2011 About even, though the Mag-v brake suits my snap cast machine gun style better. Quote
Packard Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 I think they are about even at that weight with a slight edge to the sol. Sol can handle 3/16 and 1/8 better though. Although my 200E and Carbonlite can toss 1/4oz as far as I need to. Quote
s13john Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 ive never used a sol but owned a alphas type f and have an alphas ito and also have a 50e. I think the 50 feels much more powerful and cast baits as well once you clean the bearings. personally if i had to do it again i would just get the 50e over the type f. but if you can get an ito it is a world of difference. hopefully that was convoluted enough for you Quote
Super User BASSclary Posted December 27, 2011 Author Super User Posted December 27, 2011 About even, though the Mag-v brake suits my snap cast machine gun style better. How so ? Do you just give the rod a little pop at the tip? I think I know what your talking about, how is the Mag-V better than a 6-pin in that situation? Quote
Super User J Francho Posted December 27, 2011 Super User Posted December 27, 2011 No, I whale on mine, like I'm trying to chuck a DD22 across the lake, LOL. Quote
Super User BASSclary Posted December 27, 2011 Author Super User Posted December 27, 2011 No, I whale on mine, like I'm trying to chuck a DD22 across the lake, LOL. So how does the mag-v compare to mag-z ? Quote
Super User Hooligan Posted December 27, 2011 Super User Posted December 27, 2011 Sol all the way, as much as I hate to admit it. Tune a 51, however, and I would have to go with the Shimano. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted December 27, 2011 Super User Posted December 27, 2011 Mag v has less mass. Less unsprung weight equals faster startup for lighter baits. I run a wide open spool, but dial in a lot of brakes. 6 is a starting point. Quote
Super User BASSclary Posted December 27, 2011 Author Super User Posted December 27, 2011 It's between a pretty used SOL, and a BNIB 51 right now for the same price. I'm leaning a little more to the Curado just because I can get it BNIB. But then again I want the SOL, just not as used. I'm waffling harder than Brett Favre right now. Regardless of which one I get It will get completely taken down and cleaned, lubed, bearings flushed etc. I think I might go with the 51 and then wait for a better condition SOL. I also can't decide whether or not I want to spend an extra 30$ to get a 50 instead of a 51. I've never used a lefty caster and am a little hesitant if I will like it or not for finesse fishing. s13john Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 i find mag v better too just to put it out there when you talk about finesse are you saying say 1/4 shakey + trick worm or like 1/8oz + 4in robo if the first i say shimano the other diawa Quote

Super User tomustang Posted December 27, 2011 Super User Posted December 27, 2011 Is it really that hard to throw 1/8oz with a 100-200 size reel? Quote
Super User J Francho Posted December 27, 2011 Super User Posted December 27, 2011 Go try it. Is it really that much better with a reel designed to throw light baits? Answer: Yes. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted December 27, 2011 Super User Posted December 27, 2011 I also can't decide whether or not I want to spend an extra 30$ to get a 50 instead of a 51. I've never used a lefty caster and am a little hesitant if I will like it or not for finesse fishing. I got back into fishing in '09 and went with baitcasting gear this time. Last year I didn't use my Alphas ito that much because I was much more comfortable cranking with my left hand. I had a few reels cleaned over the winter. (A few were upgraded as well.) One was the new reel I bought for my oldest grandson...right retrieve because he is left handed. I spooled some 12 lb. mono on it, mounted it on the 6' rod I got for him, and started practicing my pitching off the rear deck with it. (Yes, I know not the ideal pitching rod!) What happened was I came to enjoy cranking with the right hand as well. I bought a few more reels this past year with many of them being right handed. I now enjoy using both hands to crank with. I've even started doing some left hand casting. I turn 64 in less than 1-1/2 months. I can guarantee that you (as a very young man) have the ability to adapt quicker than I did. However, I can't say whether or not you will enjoy using both hands to reel with. That is something you will have to discover on your own. Quote
Super User grimlin Posted December 27, 2011 Super User Posted December 27, 2011 Is it really that hard to throw 1/8oz with a 100-200 size reel? LOL.......I have trouble with some 1/4 oz with just about every baitcaster I own. I won't even attempt 1/8 oz for a very good reason. Quote
Super User tomustang Posted December 27, 2011 Super User Posted December 27, 2011 Go try it. Is it really that much better with a reel designed to throw light baits? Answer: Yes. I find it easy to throw 1/8oz on a 200, only been baitcasting for a half a year, but I constantly throw 1/8 with a small grub without problems. I did buy a 50 so I can try lighter but I can throw 1/8 just as easy on both 50 and 200. My wife and I were contemplating on some premier 7'6" L rods to further the experence Quote

I've read comments like that all the time, one of the reasons why I keep picking up curados is that I'm use to them and other reels might have a different effect on my throwing ability and setup 1 Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 don't forget to factor the rod into the equation. If the rod is too powerful to load with the light bait you'll get poor results regardless of your reel choice. When matched with an appropriate rod, a "finesse" reel maximizes the setup. IMO tuning the new 51E will get you the best bang for your buck. If you really want the used Sol (or any used reel)it's well worth the few bucks to have someone go through it. Quote
