Cold Weather Gear?

Will be ordering a set of Arctic Armor cold weather gear. (IDI Gear) This stuff is unreal, bibs and jacket with a pair of gloves only weight 4 lbs and will float 3 men at one time.

Now for the question, they make it in Red and black, It has a slick lining inside. Then Green and Black it has a Fleece lining to it, along with the Camo set. So if you were ordering would you go with Red and black? Better to see if you did fall in ? Or the Green and black? But then agian I can use it hunting also and use the camo, But then again it will not stand out if you were to fall in. Then on the other hand I wear the Auto inflate SOS suppenders and they are Yellow if they actvate. So guess you can see those.

This stuff is unreal will keep you warm in normal cloths down to freezing and not burn you up in rain in 50 degree weather.

I didn't like my Arctic Armor, and went with the Clam Suit instead. Yes, it lacks flotation, but it has better range of motion and I don't sweat my butt off in it like it did with AA. The Clam has been far better for me. In spring I'll wear that instead of my 100MPH.

I have been very pleased with Cabela's Guidewear. In this part of the country, the uninsulated version is the ticket.

If you don't plan on moving much ( hiking, still hunting, walking) I would HIGHLY recommend Rivers West.

It is the best cold weather gear I have ever used. Ten year warranty, and totally wind/waterproof. It is Not very breathable as I said but I can sit in 15 degree wind/snow with just a sweatshirt underneath and not get chilled a bit.

Did you find that the clam suit and Artic Armor runs the same size? Also don't think I would have the sweating issues. As I would only use the AA in cold weather and even then could take the jacket off. Buddy of mine has been using it for 3 years. He has used his even in 50 degree weather and did not sweat. But then again he dresses light with it on also.

We fsih a lot in below freezing weather and make long runs in the boat. So would not be moving around and even with it on while hunting it would be duck hunting so again sitting not moving.

Go with the slick lining. Easier to get in and out of.

The problem I see with a suit that floats is that in the rare chance that you do fall in your legs float. This will make it harder to swim back to your boat and get back in. I would recommend a good GorTex suit like Frabill's FXE Stormsuit.Then wear your SOS 100% of the time. Connect your kill switch when the motor is running and keep a dry bag in your boat that has a towel, an extra change of fleece lined clothes, a stocking hat, two emergency space blankets, several packs of hand warmers, and a lighter to start a fire. This little bag will save your life.

The floating suits were intended to be used on the ice, where rescue is much easier if the victim is floating.

so how have you liked your artic armor?

I am looking for something to help the cold days, drifting the TN River and I know you know how cold it gets.

So far I love it and the fact that I can go out most days with normal clothes on. Stay warm all day and when it warms up still keep it on. 20 degrees and winds I still wear the jacket half zipped most times. You can overheat in it if your moving a lot, but drift fishing that is not an issue. I can move easy with it on, being it does not weight as much as a lot of the stuff out there.

Will be ordering a replacement set toward spring time. To just put back and hold on to. That way if and when something happens to this set. I have a backup. Coldest day so far 9 degrees with 10-MPH Winds when the sun came up. Was warm even thought we made a 7 mile run in that temp. Buddy was laying in the floor of the boat cold, but I was warm.

Go with the red and black, you will be easier to spot.

I too have a set of the Rivers West. Matter of fact got it when it first came out a number of years ago when I lived in Oregon and it had a lifetime warranty. When it's cold it's what I wear and I stay warm. There's lots of good stuff out there, I just happened to try this and really have liked the way it has held up.
