bmasters Posted December 26, 2011 Posted December 26, 2011 I'm going to try some flourocarbon and braid this upcoming season. What kind of experiences has everybody had with the two? What kind of flourocarbon and braid do you all recommend? Good and bad. Do you use all braid or flouro on the reel or do you use mono with a flouro leader, or use braid with a flouro leader? What knots do you use to connect the different lines together with? What lines do you use on the baitcaster and the spinning reel? I know this is alot of questions, but wanting several different responses to see what everybody thought was! Thanks Quote
Packard Posted December 26, 2011 Posted December 26, 2011 I love fluorocarbon. I am not a fan of braid but I know some members swear by it. The better lines I've used are Sunline Super Fluorocarbon, Sunline FC Sniper, and Seaguar InvisX. If I had to use braid I would use Power Pro Super Slick or Daiwa Samurai. I use either all fluoro or fill half the spool with cheap mono first to save some cash. I use a double clinch knot to connect the lines together. I like 16lb Fluoro for crankbaits, spinnerbaits, plastics, and jigs. For flipping, pitching, and punching, I like to use 20lb. I currently use all baitcasting from my kayak and in tournaments because it helps tremendously. But if I were to bring a spinning rod I would spool it up with 6lb InvisX. If you can afford Toray Superhard Upgrade or Seaguar Tatsu go for it, I haven't heard many bad things about besides their hefty price tag. Quote
Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted December 26, 2011 Super User Posted December 26, 2011 Ive used mostly braid for years now PP,SuffixPerformance,Stren Super. Like PP the most. Not really any bad experience with them. I like it cause I dont lose my lure from professional overruns like I did with mono. Plus I dont have line twist/coiling issues. Dont use leaders. Im going to try fluoro on my new reels one casting one spinning and most likely it will be Tatsu cause of the reports of how good it is. And wanting the most sensitivity out of the line which Ive read is much better than braid. Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted December 26, 2011 Super User Posted December 26, 2011 I use Spiderwire, but I use 65#. Most people on here recommend Power Pro, I know some people that use it and are very happy with it. I dont use leaders, I dont use filler line, thats just me. Knots, I always use the palomar, its quick and easy, and Ive had no failure yet. I fish in the Everglades, we have some preety tough cover down here, so good performance is everything. No problems with line, or knots so far, 4 years using the same braid. Quote
BasskingKeith Posted December 26, 2011 Posted December 26, 2011 Great experiences with the two, especially depending on the cover situation. Like Minnow said, there's some heavy cover down here, and braid is probably the best option for it. That's where braid's best features come alive, as there's no slack in braided line, so you can feel the bite instantly through that cover, given you have a taught line. Also, since braid is stronger per diameter, you can horse them through the thick stuff without worrying about breaking off too much. Fluorocarbon is my primary line, it's alright for spinning reels, but better for baitcasters. For fluorocarbon, I'd say the best "cheapest" one is going to be Berkley Vanish or Vicious fluoro. Braid is in the air, there's a lot of different companies now, but I'd say Stren sonic braid is one of the best, just my opinions through experience though. Hope this helps, good luck! Quote
RyneB Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 I use 50 lb Power Pro on my jig rod and flipping rod. I love the stuff and wouldnt use any other braid. As far as fluoro goes, i have tried berkley vanish (the worst line iv ever used), Berkley 100% fluoro (better than Vanish), and Vicious (best of the 3, but still had troubles). This winter I bought a spool of Sufix Invisline castable Fluoro, once the ice gets off the lakes, i will give it a shot. I love Sufix mono and Promix, so hopefully the fluoro is just as good. People say to use a fluoro or mono leader with braid. I fish clear water with 20 plus foot visibility, and have never once thought my braid was keeping me from catching fish. Quote
