Super User BASSclary Posted December 26, 2011 Super User Posted December 26, 2011 Just wondering if anyone has used both, and which one they like better. I had an older Crucial so i know how awesome they were, but have never owned an Avid. So let me know before tomorrow at Gander Mountain ! Quote
Fat-G Posted December 26, 2011 Posted December 26, 2011 Crucial. I would get a Compre over an Avid. 1 Quote
hookingem Posted December 26, 2011 Posted December 26, 2011 Crucial for sure they are stout rods Quote
Dave T. Posted December 26, 2011 Posted December 26, 2011 Avid's are great rods too... and built in the USA. Handle both and come to your own conclusions. Quote
0119 Posted December 26, 2011 Posted December 26, 2011 I dont think you can compare the older Crucial to the new one, doesnt it have a high modulus blank. I have older Crucials and would say workmanship is higher in the Avid. Quote
bigfishbk86 Posted December 26, 2011 Posted December 26, 2011 Apparently i'm alone on this one, but id go with the avid. Quote
Packard Posted December 26, 2011 Posted December 26, 2011 I think it would depend on the situation for me. I like full cork grip for spinners, cranks, and jigs and I would take the avid. If it is any type of plastic fishing I would get the crucial. But if I were you, I'd go with the crucial. Quote
Dave T. Posted December 26, 2011 Posted December 26, 2011 Apparently i'm alone on this one, but id go with the avid. Nope, you are not alone. I was saying the same thing. My son has two Crucial's.... newer ones, but not the latest. They are nice rods, and he likes them. However, his buddy is like me... a St. Croix fan, and has 5 or 6 Avids. I've fished with 2 or 3 of them, and they are great rods for the price, and fish as well as my LTB, and pretty close to my LE. Of course, none of them come close to my custom LX, but that's to be expected. When I consider that the St. Croix's are make in here in the USA, and not made in China, I feel a lot better about my purchase. Quote
Super User BASSclary Posted December 26, 2011 Author Super User Posted December 26, 2011 Went with the Avid, they didn't bother having any SHIMANO over the older Convergence, So picked up a 7' MH/F and so far i'm impressed. Balance is pretty decent with my Fuego so it should be very nice with a zillion. Quote
Dave T. Posted December 26, 2011 Posted December 26, 2011 You won't be disappointed. The Avid's are a great rod, with a good warranty, at a fair price... and made in the USA. Quote

Super User Hooligan Posted December 27, 2011 Super User Posted December 27, 2011 I'm a flip flopper on this one. Technique specific rods I'd go with the Crucial IE: If you want a Jig rod, or a spinnerbait rod, or... you get the idea. If you want an all around, the Avid is a better generalized taper. Quote
dink Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 Another one for the Avid. Granted, I too am a St. Croix fan with numerous Premiers, Avids and Legends. Workmanship is top-notch, but I was sold long ago on the sheer durability of all of these sticks. Highly recommended! Quote
catchnm Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 The SCIII blank used on the Avid makes it a super sensitive rod as well. Haven't handled one of the new Crucials. Quote
MrSwimJig Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 Avids are great rods, I am just not a fan of the hump they have in the grip. Quote
