Super User BASSclary Posted December 20, 2011 Super User Posted December 20, 2011 So my old crappy Samsung broke and I need a new phone for my 'upgrade' coming in a month or two. Until then, i'm phone-less unless I buy one from a pawn. So I've been looking pretty hard at the Droid Razr and 32G iPhone 4s. I've read alot about them, and comparisons between them, and cant decide which is better. I know the iOS is very simple, no manual needed, and the Android software is very customizable, but i'm not very tech savvy and dont know if I could utilize it's full potential. Another big plus is there are supposed to be more free apps on android. But with the iPhone I no longer have a need for an iPod, (Which is too small and in need for an upgrade anyways). As for feel, I thought the iPhone felt better in hand, the sharpness of the design just sort of 'cut' better in my hand, and then there is the endless case/accessory options for the iPhone, which no other phone seems to match. And Also, the camera on the iPhone is supposedly much better for taking pictures and video, which I seem to do a lot on my phone. The DROID Razr is 4g LTE though, and does stuff on the web MUCH fast, like YouTube, watching movies, and there is NO lag at all on the iPhone, while the DROID Razr is a snippet laggy. Or should I just wait for the iPhone 5 to come out (Supposedly going to be a 4g LTE iPhone. GAHHHHH!!!! Someone help me out, with their opinions. Quote

jeb2 Posted December 20, 2011 Posted December 20, 2011 Pick up this months edition, Dec 11, of Consumers Reports. They did a big comparison on the latest smart phones. They rate them by carrier. Some of the newer phones from Samsung and HTC did very well on the camera front, finally. Rated as high as the iPhone there. That is one area I've been disappointed with in my HTC Evo. Hard to take good pictures with it. That will be a much bigger item to consider the next time I get a new phone. They also have a sidebar on Android vs iPhone. I don't agree with some of what they said. They didn't mention, for example, that there are so many free apps for the Android phones and pretty much none for the iPhone. But still, some decent info in the article. Quote
Super User tomustang Posted December 20, 2011 Super User Posted December 20, 2011 iPhone = smart dumbphone, not a smartphone. Get a droid, you can listen to your music on it and not have a "easy 5 year old mentality" software, the 4G lte, better network, yada yada Quote
CFFF 1.5 Posted December 20, 2011 Posted December 20, 2011 I have to agree with first two posters. I have a Samsung Captivate and it is way better than my iPhone 3G that I had previously. I am very surprised that Apple didn't make the new iPhone's screen bigger. The 3.5" screen on the iphone seems a little small. I think the perfect size is 4". All the new phones are going to 4.5" screens and I personally think that is a little too big. The bigger screen is nice and for watching movies or playing games it probably makes a big difference but for business purposes the 4" screen is perfect. Do your research on the Android phones. I know the Samsung Galaxy SII which came out in the past couple of months is a really nice phone. Samsung makes some good phones. If I was buying a new phone today I would be looking to get the newest Google Nexus phone. The google phones will be updated first and don't come with all the bloatware or customized OS that the phone companies put on the phone. In a sense you are getting an android phone the way google intended it to be. It will be faster and will get regular updates from google before the other phones get updates. Quote
tyrius. Posted December 20, 2011 Posted December 20, 2011 They didn't mention, for example, that there are so many free apps for the Android phones and pretty much none for the iPhone. Completely and utterly untrue. There are TONS of free apps for the iPhone. Quote
tyrius. Posted December 20, 2011 Posted December 20, 2011 4g service is still very spotty (as in you're not going to get it very many places). It's also a HUGE battery hog so while your 4G antannae is on your battery performance will suffer. I prefer the iPhone. Simple and reliable. A big screen is not an issue for me (and is actually a minus) as I don't watch movies or play many games on my phone. You'll see tons of people with strong opinions one way or the other, but you just need to decide what you're going to do with your phone and buy according to your preferences and not someone else's. If you want to watch tons of videos then you'll want a bigger screen. If you have good 4G service around you then that will be a plus. If not, then it's a waste and a battery drain (unless you turn off the antannae). Quote

Steven Ladner Posted December 20, 2011 Posted December 20, 2011 I have an iPhone 4s and love this phone. The camera and video recording is incredible, the screen clarity is great, the software isn't "buggy" like most others, and there ARE plenty of free apps. There's a huge list of advantages with the iPhone 4s; after reading your post I think you'd be happier going that route. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted December 20, 2011 Super User Posted December 20, 2011 Oh yeah, video and camera on the 4S..... All filmed and edited on my iPhone: Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted December 20, 2011 Super User Posted December 20, 2011 Iv had both droid phones and an iPhone I stuck with the iPhone over the droid. Yeah apps cost more but there's free ones even if it's not jailbroken but what made me like the iPhone over droids is that my iPhone works flawlessly never freezes never slow. Those with droids how many times do u have to do a hard reset on your droid or have apps suck and screw up your phone not an issue with the iPhone. The only thing I don't like about the iPhone is I can't get on some sites that require flash and I can't upload photos from it to this site. Oh one other thing is the no sd card so I can't print pics off of my boys at walmart like I could with the droids. Other then them 2 small issues the iPhone is great. Quote

Or email them from your phone to yourself and you can get them from any computer. Quote

Yeah tried that the kiosks at the local walmart are ghetto and it dint work like it should we usually just send them to our galaxy tab then take the card out of that and print them. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted December 20, 2011 Super User Posted December 20, 2011 1. Don't print at Walmart, it's a ripoff. Use prepaid from Shutterfly*. You can upload and pay from your phone. 2. If a site is still 100% flash, it probably sucks anyway, LOL. *since they use iGen presses, it indirectly supports our local economy Quote

MrsTomustang Posted December 21, 2011 Posted December 21, 2011 We've had both. I am an IT professional and prefer Android platform phones. Husband has the iPhone. I vote iPhone for limited technical savvy folks. Although J Franco has the iPhone which is perplexing. This is a bit like the Chevrolet OHV vs Ford OHC engine debate...apples to oranges. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted December 21, 2011 Super User Posted December 21, 2011 I don't want to work when I am goofing off on my phone. My boss heard I had an iPhone, and sent me a bunch tools to synch Outlook, access the VPN, and a time card app. I laughed, and told him when he pays my bill, I'll install those apps. Quote
Super User BASSclary Posted December 21, 2011 Author Super User Posted December 21, 2011 Which size do you recommend? I was thinking the 32 because It'll be my iPod too and also I'll end up with a boat load of apps. Of should I get the 16? Quote

Exact reason I never got a BB or the iPhone. Bad enough I had to painfully wallow through our SAP CRM 7.0 w/ ECC 6.0 implementation, but as soon as the Sybase mobility came up with IPhone as the preferred platform.... I went to Android. Not being the beta tester on my personal equipment on my own time. Cheers.. I see your point, Sir. OP - 16G is sufficient...32G isbetter Quote
Super User J Francho Posted December 21, 2011 Super User Posted December 21, 2011 If you keep a ton of video footage on hand for editing later, get the 32. If you're just storing music and apps, the 16 is fine. I've joked that a 24 would be perfect, lol. But, I'm weird. Quote
Super User SoFlaBassAddict Posted December 21, 2011 Super User Posted December 21, 2011 Out of curiosity, Francho, what apps are your using for editing? I've been messing around with my iPad some more for photo and video stuff. It's incredibly handy for that kind of thing. Looking forward to the time when I can upgrade my 3GS. I just haven't had a need to. The upgraded camera on the new model definitely got me interested in the upgrade though. Quote

Of should I get the 16? Bassclary when I had my iPhone i had the 16gb and also used it as my MP3 Player. It made my phone very sluggish. I also did the same thing when I got my android phone. I have since deleted all the music on my android and have uploaded all my music to music.google.com. The first 20,000 songs you upload are free and available from any computer. I love having all my music available at just about any time I need it. It will also cache recently listened to music for offline play. Quote
