I know the Rage uses scIII graphite and the mojo uses scII graphite, but which rod is a better rod?

Posted

The Rage is better. It is also $50 more. I don't really understand this question?

I wouldnt buy either. If you can fork out the money for a Rage rod, then why not go ahead and buy a quality $160 rod. Phenix Recons are the best in that price range IMO. The new Crucials and the Powell Endurance would be a better option too. I dont like the handle on the Rage rods, the 5 year warranty, and the quality control issues.

To answer your question as stated above. I don't believe many of us here are huge fans of the either due to some personal preferences. With that said..

St. Croix's marketing objective was to fill a perceived void between Mojo and Avid series. To tinker in this market they have designed the Rage with the SCIII blank which uses their IPC (integrated poly curve technology) for a smoother blank design and smooth taper to eliminate transitional points.

It is a Pac Bay Minima reel seat/micro guide rod with a reduced stripper guide but not micro size where the Mojo uses Batson Forecast Al 2 O3 Aluminum oxide guides and a Fuji reel seat.

The handle is neoprene which for some may be okay, but as an old school gal...I dig cork or naked blank. - personal preference.

The rod runs, as stated, $150s to $170s compared to Mojo it is a step up in the St. Crox series. BUT research what you're getting for the price and warranty. With the Avid you get a lifetime no questions asked warranty..for $50 and a letter of explanation you can get a replacement even if your buddy snaps it in half in the SuV rear hatch.

I swear bass_fanatic you have me researching and eyeing them Recons- PHX - 713 the 714. Tackle Tour gave it props for the $.wish I could field test one with the Curado 200 first though.

As to the OP, the SCIII (Rage/Avid) is a far better blank the SCII the MOJO is built on. As for other concerns with the Rage line there are other good rods at the price point but it comes down to preference more than anything. Warranty is way over rated and would be my last concern. Any good company (St Croix among them imo) will stand behind their product if it is truly defective in some way. Beyond that, proper handling and use will trump any warranty/replacement program.

I just bought a 7'1" mdhvy rage, i havent had a chance to fish with it but i have played around with it quite a bit. It feels alot better than a mojo i owned a mojo last year before it was stolen out of my garage. The grip is a personal preference thing i happen to like it but you may not. I suggest going to a store and actually hold one and other rods in its price range. But to answer your question it is a much better rod than the mojo coming from someone who has owned both.

I have that one and like it a lot.

The Rage rods are polar, you'll love them or hate them.

I am wanting to see one of the 7'11'' rods but due to crooked guides I won't buy one online I want to see the rod before I buy it.

i am not considering buying any other companies rods due to the fact that i work at gander mountain and i can do whats called a VAPP which means i can order directly from the company for 50%-60% off and st. croix is the only company i can do that through. i have felt all of the mojo's and have liked them but we dont have any of the rage's in so i cant feel them to see which one i like better.

Since you've got that huge discount , why don't you get an Avid or a higher priced rod from St. Croix ? That would make better sense , wouldn't it ? Just asking. :Idontknow:

i am already buying one of the higher end rods from them but im a college student so alot of the money i have goes towards school so i dont have enough to 3 higher end rods.

Try one...I promise you wont be disappointed. I have rods from St. Croix, Shimano, Powell, and Dobyns all in the $150-$200 price range and I can honestly say the Recons blow all others out of the water! I still love my other rods, but the Recons are just in a whole nother class.

I love the look of the Rage rods, the feel of the handle, and how light they are. I don't love how many of the rods seem to have a guide or two that isn't inline with the rest. Like Hi Salenity said I wouldn't buy one online for that reason alone. The warranty doesn't bother me because I take good enough care of my stuff and if it has a factory defect I fish enough it's going to show itself before the 5 years is up. If you can get one in your hands I would really suggest that. I have a few Mojos and like them pretty well but the Rage, IMO, is a much better and nicer fishing rod.

I've got the 7' M, MH and H Mojos and they've worked well for me. I'm a weekend warrior and don't do any tournament fishing. These were the first 'nicer' rods that I've purchased, and I've been happy with them for the most part. I just bought a Shimano Compre cranking rod because the Mojo 'Crankster' was just a little too beefy for me.
