What I was doing was putting fishing the cap from the powder container, heating up the head and dipping in one side, then dipping the other. With the wire arm of a spinnerbait, I can't really dip it into my little powder container. Also, I was using a small candle to heat it up and I get black soot all over my heads. Especially when using white, If I just put it over the candle to get the rest of the powder melted, It get's black. What do you guys used for a heat source instead of a lighter or candle? And how can I get an even coating on my spinnerbait?

Without spending a bunch of money you can heat them in an stove oven or a toaster oven. If you have a heat gun or a small propane torch they will work.

You can take a small cheap makeup brush and dip it into the powder, hold it over the heated head and tap the brush to get the powder to fall on the head and paint it. Rotate the head until it is all painted.

I do this when I want to put 2 or more colors on a jig head.

Put it in the oven for 1 minute at 400, took it out, put on the paint, put it back in to melt the rest of the powder nice and good. Gonna have to order more colors though. All I got is black and white =/.

Also, can powder paint be used in an airbrush gun?

There you go a couple thousand more painted ones and you will be a pro. Very nice indeed.

As far as powder paint in an air brush. Yes it can be done. You will need a special air brush and a lot of powder. There is a lot of powder waste due to over spray. However you can reclaim it by spraying in a box. I find it very messy and you can't control where you want the colors. It is nothing like spraying on liquid paint.

Do you guys ever just put powder coat down as a base and then airbrush with regular paint over the top of it? I have been wondering about this for awhile. Was thinking though tha doing this and sealing with some Dev Con might make the bait to heavy. but i guess it doesnt matter as much here as it would on say a crankbait.

Yes, I have done exactly what you are suggesting. Base coat in powder paint and then air brushiong Createx over the bait. You will get a bait that will look spectacular if you can use an airbrush. The only problem I have had is the paint from the air brush wants to blow all around on a slippery powder painted finish. You can lower your air pressure though. Also with using powder paint and Createx, it just seems like a lot of work for jigs and spinnerbaits. (JMHO) I can powder paint all of my jigs the way I want and I'm happy. They don't look knowhere near as good as the crankbait works of art here, however they are jigs and I lose a lot of jigs, so I don't know if it justifies the cost of doing that. However, we all do things for our own reasons. On the weight of the paint and epoxy, I find that a mute point. Jigs are heavy and so are spinnerbaits. I clearcoat many spinnerbaits with D2T and I never worry about the extra weight of the epoxy.

Good points. I dont paint my jigs either past a coat of powder paint. I have fun with the spinnerbaits though. I have mostly done them with rattle cans before though. I may give this a shot this winter just for something to play with.

This will work to spray powder paint with http://www.harborfreight.com/air-eraser-kit-99636.html And for heat I use a heat gun to heat my jigs and spinner baits with. Then bake them in one of my ovens for power paint.

Build you a box with small filters for a furnace then spray into these. This allows you to catch your over spray then reuse it. But I just dip mine most of the time. I use 4" PVC pipe for my fluid bed cups and they allow me to dip 4 oz jigs and even spinner baits.
