Diggy Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 What rod brand, length and action would/did you choose for an all purpose application? Reel and ratio? line? Interested to see what you would choose or use Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 7' MH/F casting / 6.4:1 reel / 50# Power Pro w/17# fluoro leader where needed. 1 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted December 16, 2011 Super User Posted December 16, 2011 Anything in a 7' MH/F for casting, and 7' M/F for spinning. Gear ratio, somewhere 6 to 7:1. Spinning, I'd go with a 2500 series reel. Line, 12-14# copolymer or fluoro or 50# braid on casting, and 6-8# copolymer or fluoro or 20# braid for spinning. Quote

I agree with J Francho but I go with a 2000 Series spinning reel and on the and the line for both also except I step upto 30# braid for spinning when I feel its needed. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted December 16, 2011 Super User Posted December 16, 2011 ChiCity - totally depends on brand for size, too. it happens that I use Daiwa and Shimano, and 2500 works well. Tom, that was pretty much the exact combo I was thinking of, LOL. Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted December 16, 2011 Super User Posted December 16, 2011 With the proviso that I have mostly all open water and don't pitch into slop... Bass_Fanatic Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 If I had a choice of any it would be a Phenix Recon 714C paired with a Core 50 and 14lb Sunline Sniper FC My current one: Powell Endurance 714C/Plueger President 6.4:1/20lb floro Quote
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted December 16, 2011 Super User Posted December 16, 2011 Carbonlite 6' 6" medium, fast. Shimano Saros 2500 spooled with six pound test Seaguar InvisX. For the very light baits, Browning Hi Power 6', light, fast. Shimano Saros 1000 spooled with four pound InvisX. The Browning has the same handle and hook keeper as the Carbonlite. BPS currently has the Browning on sale. Reg 110, sale 70. I may have to take a ride. Quote

Bronzeback Scuttler Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 I generally fish sparse weed, rock and sand bottom so I use a G Loomis 783 IMX with a Shimano Curado 200 e7. My all purpose spinning combo is a G Loomis NRX 852s with a TD Advantage 2500A. 12lb Silver Thread Excalibur on the Curado , 10lb Seaguar Invisx on the 2500A. Quote
Super User deep Posted December 17, 2011 Super User Posted December 17, 2011 casting: 7' MH/F Shimano Compre with a 6.3:1 Citica 201E spooled with 10/12 lb Sufix Siege mono spinning: 7' ML/F St. Croix Triumph with a Browning Citori. Not sure about the gear ratio, but the IPT is around 28. It's usually spooled with 6 lb Sufix Siege mono Quote

Super User SirSnookalot Posted December 17, 2011 Super User Posted December 17, 2011 7'6 med spinning rod, 4000 reel, 15# braid.........can handle about anything inshore of freshwater that I run across. No longer married to any brand, good quality and it all works for me. Quote
tnbassfisher Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 6' 6" Medium Spinning if I had to choose just one. Technically, it's probably not the one that most would choose based on how many different types of lures you were to be throwing with it, but it's what I am most comfortable with. Quote

I might change out the reels and would go with #12 on the baitcaster. Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted December 17, 2011 Super User Posted December 17, 2011 We're on the same page! I might change out the reels and would go with #12 on the baitcaster. Well, there is certainly some BR in general, and RW in particular, influence on my selections - like the YZ line! I do have the Avid BC rod now, and consider it a good value with, for me, most of the performance of the MBR842C...but at a sensible cost. I don't have the Avid spinning rod right now...but I am fishing another brand 6'8" mxf so whenever upgrade time comes, I'll get the Avid. I ain't gonna change my reel selections though! (I actually have a Curado 50E on the Avid BC rod right now but for the purposes of this thread - selecting the components for an all-purpose combo - I would select the Carbonlite reel ) Quote
flippin and pitchin Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 Casting: Dobyns Champion 733, Lews 6.4, Yo-Zuri #15 (MH/F) Spinning: Dobyns Champion 703, Shimano Saros 3000, Yo-Zuri #8 (M/F) I honestly believe I could do 75% of my fishing with these two set ups. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted December 18, 2011 Super User Posted December 18, 2011 I don't get to fish enough to know which of my rods/reels would be my favorite all purpose setup. I try to use several of them on each outing I do get to make. The rod I seemed to reach for the most this past season was a Cumara 7' MH. Currently wears a tuned Fuego with 12 lb. Sufix Elite. However, one of my latest reel acquisitions is a Patriarch XT. I really like this reel. The spinning outfit I use the most is an old one. A 6' Berkley Lightning/Penn 430 SS/4 lb. Trilene XL because when I reach for a spinning outfit I'm going to be throwing something pretty light. This combo may be replaced next year with a Daiwa Tournament SS-II 2500C and an as yet undetermined rod.....preferably 7' or longer. EDIT: Oops. Not Elite on the Fuego. Wanted to try Fluorocabon. Local Dick's doesn't have much. Currently spooled with 10 1b Spiderwire Ultracast. Quote
