Scorcher214 Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 Was going through my pictures from kayak fishing this year and I remember finding this bad boy He was just sitting by a clump of weeds about 10 feet from some reeds. I got pretty close to him to take a picture, but he didn't come at me or even really pay attention to me. Biggest one Ive ever seen. But I was talking to an old Native american woman and she had some snapping turtle claws and I told her about my story, and she was surprised I got that close and that it didnt kill me or take my kayak out. So my question is have you ever had a snapping turtle attack you? Quote
Super User tomustang Posted December 14, 2011 Super User Posted December 14, 2011 Nope, can't say I have. Most snappers just move away from humans Quote

MyKeyBe Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 No way I would get that close. That's a big momma! They don't like to be poked Neither does my wif... nevermind. Quote
Scorcher214 Posted December 14, 2011 Author Posted December 14, 2011 Ya, I've watched enough nature videos to know how strong they are, there was no way I was about to poke it with my paddle! Oh and check this out! 1 Quote
Triton21 Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 A snapping turtle can be carried by the tail and their neck isn't long enough for it to be able to bite you. A soft shell turtle can bite you any way you carry it because it's neck is long. be careful how you handle one. Kelley Quote
Matt Jungblut Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 I was fishing with my brother about 2 yrs ago looked on the other side of the pond we were fishing. Seen something in the water I had him go over to see what it was there was a snapping turtle the size of a metal barrel top thrashing around in the water. My brother grabbed it bye the tail and lifted it up and there was a neither turtle the same size they where hooked head to tail with each other. I would guess both males fighting the scary part was my brothers hand was inches i mean inches from one mouth and with in easy range of the other. Quote
Super User Sam Posted December 15, 2011 Super User Posted December 15, 2011 There is a snapping turtle in a local pond and I throw white bread to him when he shows up. He stays about 10-feet away and eats the bread. I call him Snappy. We have an unwritten agreement: He leaves me alone and I leave him alone. Snapping turtles are dangerous animals and I suggest everyone stay away from them. Quote

He kept hitting the crankbait I was throwing, and eventually followed it back to where I was standing. My bait hung on a small branch and when I reached down for it Mr. Turtle, whom I hadn't noticed yet, snapped at my hand. Missed it by about four inches. Shot him with my .44, and now he doesn't move anymore. Quote
jeb2 Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 The Bass Pro shop in Springfield, MO has a GIANT snapping turtle on display in one of it's tanks. My wife won't let me leave until we go watch it for a while. Has to be 200lbs or better. Saw a pretty good sized snapping turtle on the lake in Northern Wisc I spend my summers at. I was surprised to see one that big up north. 20-25lbs, I'd guess. Not huge, but biggest I'd seen that far north. Quote
scrutch Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 I found a medium sized snapper clamped on a ducks leg once. I maneuvered the boat alongside the flapping duck who was just trying to stay afloat. He'd flapped all the way across this channel we were in, about 150 yards! I reached down and grabbed his tail to pick him up and he let go of the duck as soon as I touched him. I picked him up out of the water for a quick look and then released him. The duck took off like it was on fire. It rested for about 10 minutes and flew off. I have some pics somewhere, If I can find them I'll post them. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted December 17, 2011 Global Moderator Posted December 17, 2011 Never had one try to bite me when I didn't desearve it. If you stringer fish and there are snappers in the water they will find you though. They're bad about live or cutbait when I'm catfishing too. Usually if they have no reason to move towards your boat they will try to keep their distance. I have had them attack fish that I was fighting in while bank fishing though. Quote
Mrs. Matstone Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 There was a snapping turtle at a local pond I went to he weighed about 95 pounds and every time I went there to fish he would come up and lay right alongside me. He did not bother me and I didn't bother him. I think he just wanted to fish with me. My husband on the other hand hated that I just stood there and did not move away. He did not get that the turtle and I had an understanding. lol 1 Quote

Shad_Master Posted December 18, 2011 Posted December 18, 2011 Had trouble with snapping turtles - yes, but not what you think. My son discovered a whole herd of turtles trying to cross the road down near the pond in our housing development. They apparently had just hatched and were headed toward the water. Eight of them. He was afraid that a car would come along and run over them, so he got a container and brought them home. He set up a hapbitat for them and has been tending to them the last few months. They are about the size of a silver dollar. The problem? They stink to high heaven. But still, it will be interesting to watch 'em grow. Quote
