Was going through my pictures from kayak fishing this year and I remember finding this bad boy

gallery_18249_159_215152.jpg

He was just sitting by a clump of weeds about 10 feet from some reeds. I got pretty close to him to take a picture, but he didn't come at me or even really pay attention to me. Biggest one Ive ever seen. But I was talking to an old Native american woman and she had some snapping turtle claws and I told her about my story, and she was surprised I got that close and that it didnt kill me or take my kayak out.

So my question is have you ever had a snapping turtle attack you?

No way I would get that close. That's a big momma!

They don't like to be poked

Neither does my wif... nevermind. :eyebrows:

Ya, I've watched enough nature videos to know how strong they are, there was no way I was about to poke it with my paddle!

Oh and check this out!

A snapping turtle can be carried by the tail and their neck isn't long enough for it to be able to bite you. A soft shell turtle can bite you any way you carry it because it's neck is long.

be careful how you handle one.

I was fishing with my brother about 2 yrs ago looked on the other side of the pond we were fishing. Seen something in the water I had him go over to see what it was there was a snapping turtle the size of a metal barrel top thrashing around in the water. My brother grabbed it bye the tail and lifted it up and there was a neither turtle the same size they where hooked head to tail with each other. I would guess both males fighting the scary part was my brothers hand was inches i mean inches from one mouth and with in easy range of the other.

There is a snapping turtle in a local pond and I throw white bread to him when he shows up.

He stays about 10-feet away and eats the bread.

I call him Snappy.

We have an unwritten agreement: He leaves me alone and I leave him alone.

Snapping turtles are dangerous animals and I suggest everyone stay away from them.

LOL!!!! Snappy!!! That's hilarious. :D

Yes, I have had one try an attack me. He kept hitting the crankbait I was throwing, and eventually followed it back to where I was standing. My bait hung on a small branch and when I reached down for it Mr. Turtle, whom I hadn't noticed yet, snapped at my hand. Missed it by about four inches. Shot him with my .44, and now he doesn't move anymore.

The Bass Pro shop in Springfield, MO has a GIANT snapping turtle on display in one of it's tanks. My wife won't let me leave until we go watch it for a while. Has to be 200lbs or better.

Saw a pretty good sized snapping turtle on the lake in Northern Wisc I spend my summers at. I was surprised to see one that big up north. 20-25lbs, I'd guess. Not huge, but biggest I'd seen that far north.

I found a medium sized snapper clamped on a ducks leg once. I maneuvered the boat alongside the flapping duck who was just trying to stay afloat. He'd flapped all the way across this channel we were in, about 150 yards! I reached down and grabbed his tail to pick him up and he let go of the duck as soon as I touched him. I picked him up out of the water for a quick look and then released him. The duck took off like it was on fire. It rested for about 10 minutes and flew off. I have some pics somewhere, If I can find them I'll post them.

Never had one try to bite me when I didn't desearve it. If you stringer fish and there are snappers in the water they will find you though. They're bad about live or cutbait when I'm catfishing too. Usually if they have no reason to move towards your boat they will try to keep their distance. I have had them attack fish that I was fighting in while bank fishing though.

There was a snapping turtle at a local pond I went to he weighed about 95 pounds and every time I went there to fish he would come up and lay right alongside me. He did not bother me and I didn't bother him. I think he just wanted to fish with me. ;) My husband on the other hand hated that I just stood there and did not move away. He did not get that the turtle and I had an understanding. lol

WOW. If a snapping turtle got anywhere near me I'd be bolting the otherway! That is too cool.

Had trouble with snapping turtles - yes, but not what you think. My son discovered a whole herd of turtles trying to cross the road down near the pond in our housing development. They apparently had just hatched and were headed toward the water. Eight of them. He was afraid that a car would come along and run over them, so he got a container and brought them home. He set up a hapbitat for them and has been tending to them the last few months. They are about the size of a silver dollar. The problem? They stink to high heaven. But still, it will be interesting to watch 'em grow.
