bigbassctchr101 Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 Do any of you guys paint your reels? I'd like to learn how to do it. I have WAY too many reels. Even some from when I first started fishing. They are heavy so aren't used much, but they are workhorses. So i don't think it would hurt my feelings much to experiment on them (good or bad results) I'd like to know different ways and try a couple different things if anyone has any reccomendations. **Maybe this should be in tacklemaking cuz of painting?? Sorry if so. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 I havent gotten into this but I have worked on a few that were painted. Be sure to mask off all screw holes, release latches, seal edges etc. A little over spray in the wrong place makes some real headaches. Quote
Fat-G Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 I didn't paint it but... It doesn't catch you any more fish, but it's a cool thing to do if you're a tackle junkie. I would upgrade internals first and foremost, then paint. But definitely get it professionally done Quote

andamtoft Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 I attempted to do this last xmas break i was home from school. I ended up painting a older bps prolite with a black and white scheme to a veritas. It turned out pretty well. I don't know if I went about it in the best way. The thing that helped me out the most was practice taking apart and putting the reel back together. Knowing where all the pieces go is crucial as you will be taking the reel apart. A spray gun is helpful, I didn't use one until my final coat because that's when i figured out i could convert a full size compressor to work with a spray gun hose using fixtures from harbor freight. I would start on a reel that really isnt that important to you just encase something goes wrong a compromises the condition of the reel. Basically i took apart the reel and separated the parts i wanted to paint. I then used fine sandpaper to rough up the surface a bit. Then I primed the reel and applied a few coats of oil based paint. Then i put a clear coat on it. Quote
bigbassctchr101 Posted December 19, 2011 Author Posted December 19, 2011 I've got a couple that I rarely ever use now. They are perfect internally, but if I was go to sell them, internal doesn't mean much to a person that sees boat rash all over it. I rarely ever sell my stuff anyway, but now that winter is here I have a lot more free time since I dont go out in the evenings much. I figured it may be something neat to get into. Quote
