What can I use to clean my livewell? Just warm soapy water or are cleaners ok?

Posted

Someone once told me to clean aquariums with salt. Never had one so not sure How I picked that up.

Anyhow, that is what I've always used. Salt, and enough water to make a scrubbing paste, and then a BUNCH of water to rinse.

What are you trying to clean? Is it a mildew, slime, or old fashioned dirt?

Salt is a good suggestion, but keep in mind, it's an abrasive, much like using sandpaper or steel wool. Salt is often used to clean seasoned cast iron frying pans when food begins to stick, followed by another vegetable oil seasoning.

Simple Green is a pretty effective cleaner and is non-toxic and biodegradeable.

Gents,

I appreciate the responses, when we moved I was storing my boat at my in laws. It was covered but outdoors and got wet when a storm came through and ripped the cover. I got it home and opened all the hatches and the live well smelled. I will be pressure washing and shop vacuuming it dry this weekend. I will start with the antti bacterial soap. Once again thanks a million.

Yep, bleach. It's mentioned in that article I referenced above.
