Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted December 14, 2011 Global Moderator Posted December 14, 2011 I work on tying a bunch of jigs for the upcoming season. Pouring, painting, and tying jigs is really time consuming, not real expensive once you get the molds and melting pot, and satifying when you catch a good fish on one of your baits. It's a great way to pass the time but at the same time it can start another new obsession entirely. I spend a lot of time hunting and cleaning my reels also. Cleaning the garage and basement are other good ones. Keeps you busy and that way when you finally get nice weather its 2 big projects the wife can't give you so you can go fishing Plus I have 2 powerplant lakes about an hour away so if I get the urge and it's warm enough my guides won't freeze all day I'll get the guidewear out and go fishing Quote
Scorcher214 Posted December 14, 2011 Author Posted December 14, 2011 I could use a fishing book or two to read. Any suggestions? KVD's bass strategies is really good. I've gotten about halfway through it and will probably read it again. Quote
Super User grimlin Posted December 14, 2011 Super User Posted December 14, 2011 I'm quite a few rest stops north but have in-laws in Fenton (who actually like me ? ) I missed it last year so my brother-in-law went solo and got me a KVD autographed hat. I'd like to attend this year but it will depend on the road conditioins. A-Jay btw - am I the only freak that can't find the spell checker on this new version ? ? Same here..i will be trying to make the Saturday or Sunday...depending on the weather/roads. I can't drive too well in snow storms.I missed last year also. Quote
tnbassfisher Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 I've already started going back and re-reading all of the articles on here. That should keep me busy for at least a few days. Quote

I've got an former Sister-in-Law who lives in Troy, but I'll pass on visiting her. I probably can't make it there for KVD's Friday seminar. Just a timing thing if I'm going to be gone the rest of that weekend. But I did see that Kim (Hook-n-Look) Stricker is going to be there on Saturday. Maybe a bunch of us could corner him and get the scoop on how his day really was with the Big O! I was thinking maybe a bunch of us could meet for breakfast before the show opens, or perhaps all of us could hit the Shore Lunch Booth around lunch time! Don't worry about the roads either. Lock in the 4WD and just stay clear of the crazy people with the snowmobile trailers. I'm pretty sure that they're the worse winter drivers. BTW - Spell check? There's a couple of apps for it, but I won't worry about it until Long Mike shows up to correct my posts! Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted December 14, 2011 Super User Posted December 14, 2011 I don't want to rub it in ( like helll I don't, lol) but I plan on fishing everyday, this is my favorite time of year down here. Quote

We won't rub it in either when we are catching 5lb footballs this spring, and it's already hot and humid there. Quote

JIGFISHERMAN. Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 I would rather do some pretty terrible things to myself than ride around in a big boat trolling.... No desire to fish most salt water fish. 1 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted December 14, 2011 Super User Posted December 14, 2011 I would rather do some pretty terrible things to myself than ride around in a big boat trolling.... No desire to fish most salt water fish. I was thinking the same thing. People ask me all the time why I only fish trout in the winter. Because I can't cast to them in the summer. Now snook and redfish from a kayak or small boat? That might be pretty cool. 1 Quote
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted December 14, 2011 Super User Posted December 14, 2011 I'm in the process of finding out what I've been missing since 2008. I'm still fishing my favorite pond in SE Mass. Been away for almost two weeks, but the fish are still biting. When we left for GA, I had been catching them right up against the vegetation along the shore, very slowly working a wacky worm. The water temp has dropped several degrees since we left. Water temp today was 41.3 - 41.9. The fish had moved out to the three to four or five foot depths, but they were still biting. Caught several nice bass today, including my biggest of the year. Don't know exactly what it weighed but I could put my fist in its mouth and still have a good half inch clearance or more all the way around. While the bite seemed more aggressive than when I left, the fish were noticably more sluggish except for one good size pickerel that parted my line. The next couple of days are supposed to be in the mid fifties with showers. Back to the pond tomorrow and the next day if all goes well. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted December 15, 2011 Super User Posted December 15, 2011 I would rather do some pretty terrible things to myself than ride around in a big boat trolling.... No desire to fish most salt water fish. I do very little trolling, most of my fish caught are done by casting with artificial lures. People target what's available in the area they live, once I moved down here and discovered what I could catch, it captivated me. Majority of my fishing is inshore on foot, if you feel snook, redfish, bonefish, jacks and tarpon kinda dull and boring, saltwater isn't for you. I still get out and bass fish nearly every day for a few hours, I still enjoy it, but not like the other. @Francho, lots of guys kayak out in the ocean for sails and amberjack (2nd photo). I caught it by sling jigging, that one may only be 30#, they go over a 100. I'm too old for a kayak, that rotund guy in the photo is my fishing bud Larry, he's 81, but we are in a boat......lol. Super User Ratherbfishing Posted December 15, 2011 Super User Posted December 15, 2011 The problem is, there isn't any ice. It's been far too warm. If there was ice, and it was thick enough, I'd be out on it. Ice fishing isn't as comfortable as liquid water fishing but I love watching my little humminbird flasher tell me when fish are around and, especially, watching the little light bar intersect with my bait. Then watching as my spring bobber dips down. Makes it all worthwhile. Quote
Scorcher214 Posted December 21, 2011 Author Posted December 21, 2011 Got some jigs from Cadman and went to work. I got these heads plus finesse jigheads and will be ordering plenty more shortly. Cadman did the pouring and painting, I just put the skirt on. Quote
tholmes Posted December 21, 2011 Posted December 21, 2011 Since we got about 9 inches of snow Monday night and Tuesday, my fishing is over for a while. I'll while away the cold weather by: Fishing whenever conditions permit playing my guitars pouring, painting and tying jigs packing up some baitcasting reels to send to * for service clean and lube a few spinning reels playing my guitars memorizing the BPS and Cabela's catalogs waiting for the Sports, Boat and Travel show in Wichita next February cleaning out and organizing my tackle boxes Slowly going crazy(er?)waiting for liquid water to return playing my guitars some more shop around for a new 7' crankbait rod try to figure out how to build a fluid bed Spring can't get here soon enough! Bass Junkie Posted December 21, 2011 Posted December 21, 2011 Starting jig building Tying Flys for a fly swap Tying feathered trebles Maybe a little Ice Fishing but I hope not... No ice would be nice. Trying my luck for Walleye in a local tailwater, and Smallies if there is a warm day. Buying a whole load of those $1.00 buzzbaits from Wally World and modifying them to my personal preferences..... A great way to blow through a couple days and you can produce some winners..... I have some that sound like Mopars when they run.... Clank rattle and squeak.... Reading a Bassmasters book I was recently given... Its from back in the day... Ken Cook, KVD when he was a rookie.... Outta be interesting I've already completely re-arranged my tackle system Getting my hands on another Duckett So I should be fine for....A week? And then its back to Bassresource and old Bassmasters tourneys on YouTube...... Quote
Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted December 22, 2011 Super User Posted December 22, 2011 That's it, I'm moving south. Shhhhhhhh. Naw you dont wanna do that. It's hot and humid enough to kill an elephant. Tell all your friends and family also. The South is a terrible place to go or to live. Quote
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted December 22, 2011 Super User Posted December 22, 2011 Here we are in SE Mass on the first day of winter, and I'm going fishing. Temps were in the mid fifties yesterday with rain. Mid fifties today, sunny with light westerly winds. I went last Wednesday and they were still biting, but in slightly deeper water. Taking my great nephew who is up here from Florida for Christmas. I'm pretty sure the pond will deliver him an early Christmas present of a bass or several. Quote
Sfritr Posted December 22, 2011 Posted December 22, 2011 What are you using for bait? Corn mostly............ Quote
basshunter62 Posted January 4, 2012 Posted January 4, 2012 Don't have to worry to much about the ice, still gets cold sometimes unlike Florida. no basement here in Texas, I will fish in the tanks, lakes and rivers. Might have to get into the lure making though Quote
