Teh Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 I'm debating between these 2 reels. The budget dictates I only get one. I throw alot of plastics, which has me thinking the Curado, but then I also love throwing hollow bodied frogs and other topwater plugs, which makes me think the Lews. It's a good problem to have as I dont think I can go wrong with either one. I'd like to hear from anyone who has used both, and get their thoughts. Thanks! Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted December 8, 2011 Super User Posted December 8, 2011 If you want to throw light stuff get the 50. I have 1 TSS & 2 TP'S but the 50 is my favorite for light baits. Quote
baluga Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 I'm not sure why you don't consider CU50E for throwing topwater plugs but It's one of the reels I use for casting Sammy 85&100, Gunfish 115 and Zara Spook Jr that could cast them a mile consistently. Quote
Teh Posted December 8, 2011 Author Posted December 8, 2011 It's not that I don't consider the 50 for topwater, just wondering what it's limits are if say, I want to throw out a Mattlures U2 or Huddleston 6in. I know not ideal, but I am looking for one that is a good all around performer for a variety of techniques. Thanks for the replies, I learn new things from this place everyday (my wallet doesnt thank you) Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted December 8, 2011 Super User Posted December 8, 2011 If you do go for a Lew's get the TP. I got 1, not long ago on the Bay used for $93. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted December 8, 2011 Global Moderator Posted December 8, 2011 Seems like you're asking a lot from one reel. I use a 50E for all my topwaters except frogs and buzzbaits, mainly because I like a heavier, longer rod for frogs and buzzbaits than I do for poppers, spooks, and propbaits. The 50E will fish plastics just fine but I wouldn't even consider fishing a 6" Hudd on mine, I'd rather use a bigger reel with more line capacity for longer casts. I don't have any personal experience with the Lews but the Curado is capable of doing most anything you could ask it to and if you look around you can find them on sale for a good price. Quote
Teh Posted December 8, 2011 Author Posted December 8, 2011 Thanks bluebasser, I know I'm asking for alot, haha. I can only spend the money unfortunately for one expensive (to me) reel, so of course I'd like it to cover as many of my favorite techniques as it can. It sounds like I'll end up going with whichever I get the best deal on. TW has the 51E on sale for $119 right now ...I don't mind it being a lefty model. Quote
Super User tomustang Posted December 8, 2011 Super User Posted December 8, 2011 Buy the Curado E, the speed spool will still be around to buy later Quote
21farms Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 i have two of the high-speed TPSSs (not the TSS) and also a curado 50E. the 50E is a great caster with plastics and, after i put in a set of boca bearings, became absolutely incredible. my problem with the 50E is the smallish knobs on the handle and i would've preferred a faster gear ratio...the difference in observed retrieve rate is quite noticeable. as for the lew's, i like mine plenty...i wasn't sure i'd like the paddle knobs at first but they feel quite nice on the water. i think you'd like them both. 1 Quote
