Super User Goose52 Posted December 7, 2011 Super User Posted December 7, 2011 Now I know why BPS has marked-down the previous Carbonlite to $89. The naysayers will be along shortly...but this is really a significant achievement for BPS, a reel in the 5 ounce class at this price point. And to be offered in 3 gear ratios to start. Carbon fiber drag as well. Increased bearing count (handle knobs and worm shaft? - or better - somewhere in the driveline?). Anyway, LOTS of value here. I see they've changed their centrifugal brake set-up from that used on the PQ and earlier CL. Some of the weight savings is there (and you have a lighter spool weight of course). It will be interesting to see where the rest of the weight was saved. I've already got 13 BPS BC reels (including a NIB CL), but it looks like I have to add a 14th reel to my collection! Quote

Do you like the Carbonlite reels alot? Im in the market for a new reel and I may pick one of these up and possibly the regular one for my friend Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted December 7, 2011 Super User Posted December 7, 2011 Sure - the CL is a great reel - I have one mounted on a Loomis MBR842C GLX. I have another NIB that I got for $80. The only negative about the previous CL model is that it's available only in a 6.4:1 gear ratio and many folks wanted a 7.x ratio model. If I didn't already have a bunch of PQs and other BC reels, including a total of 7 BC reels in the 6 ounce class, I would have bought a few more CLs over the past year. I expect that the old CL on the Loomis rod will be replaced by one of these new CLs in the near future... Quote

I may pick up the 7 ratio version in righty since thats the only one they sell in that ratio. We will see what happens at xmas time, I may get both Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted December 8, 2011 Super User Posted December 8, 2011 Looking more closely at the images of the reel - some interesting things: The spool shaft is black in color - why? The sideplate release pin looks like it is threaded like a Revo S, instead of spring-loaded like the PQ and earlier CL - perhaps changed to shave a tiny fraction of an ounce of weight for the captive spring on the earlier design! The centrifugal and magnetic braking systems are different from the earlier BPS reels. Also, the magnetic adjustment dial on the outside of the reel might also have an external adjustment for the centrifugal. Check out the photo - an outer ring with graduations from 1 to 10 (magnetic) - and some inner markings for: FREE . .. ... What are these markings? A bare PQ or CL aluminum frame only weighs 1.14 ounce and this new CL frame is still aluminum so they couldn't have shaved much weight off the frame. The new spool has bigger ports - some savings there. But they had to find a total of .8 ounce in savings. I rarely pay full price for a BPS reel and usually wait for the eventual sale...but I guess I might have to get one of these at the full price when they become available since I am now really curious about how they shaved the weight to get under 6 ounces. Thats interesting, I just weighed two of my PQT spools with 30# braid and leader and it weighs less than the bare carbonlite and regular PQ spools.I always wanted to know how much those carbonlite spools weighed. Thanks Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted December 8, 2011 Super User Posted December 8, 2011 The weight I quoted (1.14oz) was for the PQ and CL frames - not the spools. Quote
Jaheff Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 Wow, my mistake, i totally mis read that. Do you know how much a carbonlite spool weighs? Quote
Diggy Posted December 8, 2011 Author Posted December 8, 2011 ot the new extreme is on the site and it has a DBS and is 7.2 oz down from 8.6/8 79.99 Quote

Do you know how much a carbonlite spool weighs? .65 oz ot the new extreme is on the site and it has a DBS and is 7.2 oz down from 8.6/8 79.99 The Extreme rods are marked down to $59 - perhaps they are being clearanced to prepare for the introduction of a new Extreme rod to go with the new Extreme reel. Perhaps the "Powerhump" will finally go away... Quote

Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted December 10, 2011 Super User Posted December 10, 2011 Whoa, I was nearly set on getting the Abu MGX (going for lightness) but this at only .5oz more but $220 less put the brakes on that. Will definately follow this for more info. Ive read good things in the past about the Carbonlites Quote
Diggy Posted December 13, 2011 Author Posted December 13, 2011 Wonder when theyll go on sale, hopefully before xmas Quote
Packard Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 I will be picking up one of these after I get my BPS gift card for xmas. Think this is strong enough to handle the hard hooksets when punching or should I use the BPS on my plastics rod and put my brand new Curado 200E7 on my punching rod? Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted December 13, 2011 Super User Posted December 13, 2011 No one that I know of has handled and disassembled this reel yet to determine how they got the weight down. While it may turn out to be suitable for service with braid and hard-hooksets...one doesn't know for sure yet. I will be using this new CL on my worm rod, replacing an earlier (Gen1) CL. Quote

Yeah I just can't believe they could make it this light for this cheap of a price without giving it a weak structural support. Or whoever made this reel is just a fishing guru. Either way, most likely I will be buying one but will have to experiment with it to decide which setup to put it on. Quote

Either reels drag will give before any damage is sustained on the inner workings. The weight reduction of the Carbinlite claims to be accomplished through the use of Duralumin drive gear, shaft, and worm gear. The alloy is light and hard. A one piece aluminum frame should be strong. I'd put the reels you have in service based on line retrieve. The E7 is the faster of the two. Quote
21farms Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 The weight reduction of the Carbinlite claims to be accomplished through the use of Duralumin drive gear, shaft, and worm gear. the current carbonlite already employs duralumin for the drive gear, wormshaft, crankshaft and spool so the bulk of the additional 0.8 ounce weight reduction must be coming elsewhere. Quote
Packard Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 Where did it go? It isn't on their website at the moment. I hope this wasn't some cruel joke Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted December 15, 2011 Super User Posted December 15, 2011 I noticed that too. Don't know why they pulled it off the web. The new Extreme reels and rods are still on the web and still listed as out of stock. When the 1st gen CL was released, BPS pulled the listing for the reel off their web site several times but that was because they had started selling them and were constantly selling out. It took several months before they caught up with demand. In the case of this new CL, they haven't started selling yet.... Quote
