Me and the wife got talking the other day about moving out of state but we don't quite know where. We wanna move to either Wyoming, Montana, utah the only prob is I can't think of anything out that way cities or what types of jobs would be available. The other places are Kentucky, Texas(my pick), Arizona(also mine), one of the carolinas or Virginia.

Anyone familure or from these areas what's the economy like there I know it's crap everywhere but some places are worse then others. I'm pushing for Texas apply for a job with border patrol after I get back from Kuwait and move to Texas and catch some of them monsters big o catches.

My family is from there my mom grew up in Norfolk I got aunts and uncles in va beach my older sister is in Arlington I believe or that area anyways. I'd wanna be in southern part.

Hhaha Come to Va!! I welcome you! I couldn't tell you about jobs since I'm a bricklayer and actually sitting at home since I got layed off and bricklaying is the only thing I know since been doing for 10 years.

Well besides the job part we gotta figure in schools for the boys as well plus hunting and fishing for them and myself as well.

Right now the plan is I go to Kuwait for a year and while I'm gone the wife is supposed to go to school for nursing or culinary. Then when she's done we move and I either go back to school for some thing I have no clue what though or I go back to turning wrenches what I already what to school for. That or I do the border patrol gig what I really want or FBI.

VA isn't too bad, there is Quantico and Fort Belvoir if you stay in the armed forces, and all within a short drive from Stafford, where I live. It's a nice little spot, almost zero crime, plenty of schools, nice people, and there is shopping (Target, Kohls, Walmart, restaurants, etc. within about 10 minutes, and only 20 minutes away from Woodbridge or Spotsylvania for your wifes mall needs There are some pretty nice holes around here as well, my dad caught his 13 lber 13 miles away from my house, The Potomac, where fishing is basically endless. That, and VA has seasons, which I enjoy. Its hot in summer, warm in spring, cool in fall, and cold and snowy in winter. I couldn't function with hot or cold all year. It's not too expensive of a place to live either. I'd recommend checking it out. Stafford is quite the Booming place right now, it's in the top 20 fastest growing areas of the US. It's not much a city either. Right off the high way is some shopping, then going west comes all the local businesses we all love, then comes neighborhoods, then the country if you wish. There is a little for everyone.

I have thought of this extensively and what I WAS gonna do and stay in New York fixing Blackhawks or Chinooks. Recent events have kinda turned me away from this I guess it will depend on how and if this deployment to Kuwait goes.

My 1st Sgt is from stafford and drives here to ny every other week or so he loves it there other then all the marines he says lol.

I recommend Alabama. We got something for everyone. The medical industry is huge in Birmingham. You got your army and aerospace jobs in Huntsville. Pharmaceutical plants going up in Birmingham and Huntsville. Aircraft, both airforce and army choppers in Montgomery and Mobile. Automotive manufacturing scattered through out the state. Shipping and other forms of boat work, manufacturing, and repair in Mobile. And let us not forget the iron and steel industries in Birmingham. Plus as long as you stay to the outskirts of the big cities real estate is cheap. With the exception of the suburbs directly south of Birmingham. Which are expensive as all hell, and hopefully I will be out of them soon. Plus you have hunting fishing and all the other benefits of the outdoors. Lastly the biggest plus in my opinion, an 1/8 inch of snow shuts the entire city down. Unless your one of those nutters from North east Alabama that lives on a mountain.

I had thought Idaho would have been good, but it does rank down a bit on the list. Close to you now id Vermont and N.H, not too bad at all and VA is pretty good too. One of my students just got a job in north Dakota on an oil rig or something idk how believable it is but it's what he says.

You can believe it. They're punching holes all over the western half of North Dakota right now looking for natural gas. Our oldest Grandson went to Colorado right after graduating high school several years ago for the same type of boom and hasn't looked back since. From what he has said, it is hard to get work on a rig itself, but there tons of support jobs. He started out working for a pipe supplier where he and another guy were "drifting pipe" at the well sites. As he described it, drifting a pipe entails running a short length of slightly large pipe down the length of the main pipe to look for warped pipe that could change a well's direction. His starting pay back then was $15 per/hour with all the hours you could handle available. He now has his CDL and is trucking for the same company and has been up there several times.

Bad news is that his job (like many oil/gas jobs) bounces the family all over the place. Even worse is the fact that this latest activity is in one of the coldest places in the lower 48! I was stationed in Nort'Dekota for over three years, eh. Some of the nicest people you'd ever want to meet, but the winters were absolutely brutal. Sell most of your bass fishing rods in favor of walleye rigs, and mothball your deer rifle in favor of a good goose/duck gun. Mount a good block heater on each of the cars, and pack a survival kit in the trunks. Once all that is done, the only thing left to do is to purchase enough clothes to make sure that when you go outside there isn't any exposed skin that "40-Below" air can freeze solid.

Clayton, Virginia is a unique state. We have a lower unemployment rate that other states and also have mountains and the ocean plus lots of lakes and rivers.

When you apply for any federal positon check about relocation. Many federal positons alow you to tansfer after a number of years.

VA hands down! Lived here all my 47 years and cannot see living anywhere else. 2 hours gets you anywhere you want to be, beach, mountains! 20 minutes to the most powerful city in the world. Museums and a great school systems as well. What else do you need? Cost of living is a bit steep but it's well worth it in the long run. Sooo many places to fish and hunt. Nice seasonal changes that are not too severe. It's the beginning of December and we have a mid 50's day! Nice!

Are you planning to commission after VMI?

I would'nt consider South Carolina, everything tanked 2-3 years ago and really has'nt rebounded yet. There are some jobs out there, maybe even some diesel mechanic jobs, howere I still would'nt want to live here.
