I have been reading and learning for a couple of weeks, without introducing myself. I live in South Africa and fish for bass as well as anything else I can catch on artificial lures. At present I have logged over 70 different species. I have also been making lures for more than 15 years and hope I will be able contribute to this great site. Chris

Welcome to the site loodkop.

I've read that you guys have splendid barbus/carp species in SA. How many of the 13+ types have you caught?

We have 9 large yellowfish(barbus) species in SA with some more in our Northen neighbours. Ihave caught 6/9 and are hoping to add the other 3 next year coming the 1000 mile trip with our interprovincial bass champs. Yellows are great sport and pound for pound it is much stronger than tigers, bass or trout. Chris

That is exceptional! I will never see one except online and can say I'm a little jealous. You have a true treasure with the SA Yellows...Hopefully their numbers will hold.

It's said that the largemouth's runs are lightening fast and majestic to be on the reeling end of the rod. Guess that is why fly fishing for them has been growing.

Enjoy the barbus and, again, welcome!

P.s. Do you have any pics of some of the yellows?

I will probaly die before catching a muskie, stiper or salmon, but yes the yellows are good fun. Most of my yellow fishing is done with light tackle 4-6 spinning or the flyrod and in moving water. We have several groups working for yellowfish conservation but it is not high on goverment agendas. Chris

True, our geography has us both religated to enjoy our local species.

Glad to hear there is at least a precursor acknowledgement of the yellows potential declination.

Take care Chris.
