doug deike Posted November 28, 2011 Posted November 28, 2011 Hey folks, I've been trying to learn some new fishing knots lately, any ideas? whats your favorite knot for different situations? 1 Quote
LuckyHandsINC. Posted November 28, 2011 Posted November 28, 2011 I use a polymer knot as often as I can. It's very quick and very easy. The only exceptions are with flourocarbon I use the shaw grigsby "no idea what its called knot" that's what he calls it . I think its also referred to as the eugene knot. Then sometimes I use a loop knot when I don't want the bait to be hindered by the knot. Mostly cranks and I also use it for swim jigs. Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted November 28, 2011 Global Moderator Posted November 28, 2011 Palomar for braid, Improved clinch for mono. I've tried both and the trilene for floro. But haven't decieded which to stay with yet. I like the palomar because it's the easiest to tie but also it's the most easiest to tie wrong. Mike Quote
Super User J Francho Posted November 28, 2011 Super User Posted November 28, 2011 Palomar for most everything, when possible, Uni Knot most everything else. Improved clinch for spinnerbaits and b9uzzbaits with P-Line CXX because it's fast and holds. Any bent eye hooks, I Uni snell. Alberto's (modified Albright) for braid to leader. Quote
dude loves to fish Posted November 28, 2011 Posted November 28, 2011 palomar for braid and clinch for most other Quote
Packard Posted November 28, 2011 Posted November 28, 2011 San Diego Jam for everything! By the way if you have a smartphone I suggest you download the Knot Wars app. It is a great tool for learing new knots and the animation on it is spectacular. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted November 28, 2011 Super User Posted November 28, 2011 I keep it simple, they hold great and easy to tie. Loop knops for lures, clinch knot for leaders and a double wrapped improved clinch to tie a swivel on braid. I've had 2 problems, first is when I join braid lines I've been using 2 clinch knots, never had a problem until a sailfish pulled it thru and another time with an amberjack, anything up to 50 or so pound fish have held just fine. I'm now doing 2 improved clinch knots, has worked fine but haven't caught fish like I mentioned since I started using it. Second problem was the alberto, it works great but this is what happened. I only use this knot for some toothy critters, I tied a leader of about 5', I found 10 total wraps held like iron. I caught fish including some bigger jacks and lots of fish 5-10 pounds and I never changed the leader as I didn't use up very much of it. After about 2 weeks while casting the knot came unraveled. I'm not a saltwater guy but I use the Alberto to tie heavy mono or flouro leaders to braid. I had the knot come undone once on a backlash. Now I use a drop of superglue on the knot. It seems to have fixed the problem. Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted November 28, 2011 Super User Posted November 28, 2011 All line to terminal tackle ... 16/20 or Pitzen strong, quick, easy, even with gloves on. Quote
CSimon2 Posted November 28, 2011 Posted November 28, 2011 I have been tying double palomar knots on everything for 15 years now. It is simple to tie and very strong. When I get a snag, the hook either bends to free the snag or I wind up bringing in the tree branch. I hardly ever break off due to this knot. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted November 28, 2011 Super User Posted November 28, 2011 Single hooks: Palomar Treble hook lures: 16/20, also known a Duncan or Pitzen Quote
James Yalem Posted November 29, 2011 Posted November 29, 2011 I use the Palomar knot for everything. However, the reason that I use the Palomar knot is because I am 56 and farsighted. Thus, without reading glasses (which I do not want to bring on the boat), I can't see the open bottom loop(s) well enough to finish knots like the San Diego, Berkley Braid or Triple Loop, especially when tying 20-40lb test braid line. It's hard enough to get the line through the split ring or hook eye to start the Palomar, but I can finish it even in low light. Fortunately, the Palomar knot holds up with both braid and fluorocarbon. Something to look forward to for you younger bassers. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted November 29, 2011 Super User Posted November 29, 2011 I'd be lost without bifocals (progressive lens in my case). Quote
A-Rob Posted November 30, 2011 Posted November 30, 2011 San Diego Jam is a GREAT knot for flouro and with increased wraps is great for braid to. I will also tie Palomar on braid sometimes. I will tie the modified albright for braid to leader. Quote
psuangler91 Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 I use a palomar for braid and obviously when I'm tying a drop shot. For everything else I use an improved clinch but after watching that video of the reverse clinch I may start tying that. I read somewhere that if you put your line through the eye twice it'll strengthen your knot. Anybody know if that's true? Does it hurt at all? I've been doing it for a while and have never had a problem but I haven't had any monsters on either. Quote
38 Super Fan Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 Palomar for lures/hooks and uni-uni for leaders are all I know, and all I need to know. Quote
hike4steel Posted December 3, 2011 Posted December 3, 2011 Palomar and improved clinch. will use a loop knot for steelheading. Quote
shootermcbob Posted December 4, 2011 Posted December 4, 2011 My favorite. Use it for both flourocarbon and mono with no problems ( see the link below.) I use a double palomar for braid. Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted December 6, 2011 Super User Posted December 6, 2011 Polomar all day long Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted December 7, 2011 Super User Posted December 7, 2011 Just about any knot tied properly will hold well, becomes personal choice. My criteria is pretty simple, if the knots hold with offshore fish, they will hold for inshore and freshwater. Quote
piscicidal Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 Snell knot for flipping/pitching rigs. Alberto knot for joining thick leader material to braid. Blood knot for joining braid to flouro/mono of similiar diameter. Palomar for most everything else. Quote
msolorio Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 yep, palomar all day everyday even with fluoro, never had an issue. i use the blood and/or albright for attaching leader to main line. Quote
