tnbassfisher Posted November 27, 2011 Posted November 27, 2011 What different features/specs does everyone look for when they are choosing a new crankbait rod? I am considering making a purchase in the near future and would like some input. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted November 27, 2011 Super User Posted November 27, 2011 The main characteristic is Moderate Action, meaning that the rod bends towards the middle. For most lures, medium power is what I recommend. The St. Croix Avid AVC70MM is a good example. However, if you spend a lot of time with deep divers (DD22), you will find a much stouter rod makes life easier. For this technique the Lamiglas SR705R is the perfect fit. This is my new favorite: Pinnacle DHC5-701CAMCB. The rod is built with a proprietary blank featuring a beautiful heavy epoxy finish. The rod is split-grip with AAA grade cork, Fuji real seats and Alconite guides. The guides feature diamond polished stainless steel frames. http://www.pinnaclefishing.com/shop/p-87-perfecta-dhc5.aspx#page=page-1 Quote
flippin and pitchin Posted November 27, 2011 Posted November 27, 2011 Kent summed it up pretty well. I want the parabolic action of glass, yet a small diameter blank, the ability to feel what the bait, is doing in the lightest package possible. Quality reel seat, guides and a full rear grip in 7 feet. I fished Lamiglas XCT, XCC, Excel and SR705R rods for the last 10 years until I got a Dobyns Champion 705G. I am so impressed with the Dobyns. It's my go to rod. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted November 27, 2011 Super User Posted November 27, 2011 Some of it depends on the type of cranking your doing. For example, ripping lipless cranks out of grass IMHO is best done with a fast action rod, so you can get a good clean snap out of the weeds with out to much of your energy being wasted by loading the rod up. Delaware Valley Tackle Posted November 28, 2011 Posted November 28, 2011 The SR705 mentioned above loads well and launches baits a mile, has a moderate action to keep fish hooked up, enough sensitivity to feel the bait wobble and enough backbone to not have to worry about fishing around cover. tnbassfisher Posted November 29, 2011 Author Posted November 29, 2011 These were some of the answers I was looking for. I have heard things along the lines of the recommendations before, but just never could figure out why these things were needed or helpful. But thanks guys, I think I have a better idea of what to look for now. Quote
Red Posted November 29, 2011 Posted November 29, 2011 I don't throw any deep diving cranks so I don't have a rod for that. I use a Lamiglas Excel 703C for medium cranks like a Bandit 200. I use a Powel Squarebill Rod for all my shallow cranks in heavy timber. This thing is a freakin beast, I love this rod and find myself also using it for spinnerbaits and buzzbaits and anything else when I need to get back in the junk. This rod has no problems getting quality fish out from heavy cover. Quote
