Calling Up Stripers..

Have you guys ever "called up Stipers" ? We went today and banged the bottom of the boat in rythym with a pool stick and got stripers to come up to investigate and got them to bite our shad! It was so much fun! Anyone have any information on this, i cant find very much information online about this.

It was nutz watching them on the sonar. There would be yellow lines right on the bottom and we were sitting still and when you started dropping the stick they would come up the water column. It was fun I cant wait to try it again.

I've heard of several different techniques used to "call in" all kinds of different fish. Some local guys do it for flathead catfish around here. They swear it works well but never tried it myself. I imagine it just sounds like other fish feeding and they come to investigate. Or maybe it sounds like nothing they've heard and they come to investigate.

We have done it three different times, they dont always bite but you can see them come up the water column for sure...give it a try!! I am blown away with how well it works.

We don't have stripers but calling does work for some of our local predators. I like to use the trolling motor lifted halfway out to beat the water into foam over drop off while stroking a redeye shad. Using an oar or the nethandle to make a commotion also works. We also use special rods to call catfish out of thick cover.

Interesting...it does not seem to bother bass either, we have caught a bunch of them while doing it as well.

yeah i saw that on world fishing network hooking up with mariko isumi i believe and yeah its crazy that it actually works i wonder if it would work for any other fish or if its just stripers its a very interesting topic i would love to know why it works haha

It works for bass or at least does not turn them off in deep water, we have been catching bass along with the stripers. It is ridiculous!! you can see them coming into the sonar!

I usually drop my bait to the bass when I see them on the graph.

I can only speak about local waters but one of the theories is that predators are naturally curious and will investigate a commotion to see if there is a feeding opportunity. A trick to attract bass is to scatter a handful of gravel over shallow water. This excites the minnows which excites the bass. Poorman's hydrowave.

Very interesting i might just try this idk..i troll for stripers on the chesapeake bay spring-fall would it work there? Also We use planing boards for our lines to make it look like a spread out school of fish...anybody use those? They seem to work really well out here not alot of people use them just some people

I have "called up" stripers using a CC pencil popper lure when I could find them, but not get them to hit a sub-surface lure. I have heard stories about guys hitting the water with a paddle doing the same thing, but they can be so sensitive to noise I haven't tried it myself. If you spook them, they can be hard to find again. Good to know it worked for somone, maybe I will try it if they make me desparate enough.
