Smoking...

I have been sick for weeks now and I'm tired of not being able to breath. I'm going to start training again on the mountain bike when I'm not fishing.

I just wanted to put it out in the universe so you guys could help keep me accountable.

Today is day 1.

Good for you. It has been over 15 years for me. I really can't remember exactly when I finally quit-I did it several times. It has been a long time since I wanted one. That did not happen quickly...

It is not easy, but not waking up in the morning and coughing for several minutes before breathing more or less normally is a wonderful thing. Good luck.

Good luck, I've never smoked regularly in my life and I'm really glad I don't. I've been around people who smoked their whole life and the coughing sounds terrible and painful. I guess having asthma was probably a bit of a blessing in that sense  Seriously though, I hope you can find the willpower to kick the habit.

I smoked and dipped for almost 20 years, but I quit for good in March of 2009. I used the nicotine gum. It's not the tastiest gum in the world, but it really worked for me. Good luck!

I know you can do it as I did. It does get easier as each day passes. Stick with it Lee.

Been six weeks for me. Stick with it, it gets a little easier every day.

Nicotine patches, lots of gum. And pretzels :P

Day number 3. Gum and an electronic cig seem to be holding off the cravings. Thanks for the encouragement. I will keep you updated.

Keep it up! Like everyone else says, it gets easier as you go along. You might be crabby at first, but just stick to it. You will feel a lot better. You will be able to smell and taste food so much better.

Good for you !!!!!!!! I quit 29 years ago. My late father was a two pack of Camels plains a day. He quit when I was a teen. It was hell on earth. He tried everything and nothing helped until one day he whittled a small piece of pine on a job site. He chewed pine sticks for about nine months. One night at the dinner table he told my mom, younger brother and I he felt he had finally beat the craving, the addiction. My brother said, " Thank God..but if you ever have to quit the stick, i'm moving out." Keep us posted bro !

Smoked 4-5 packs a day for 22 years. Quit 20 years ago when I got the chicken pox and nearly died. They (chicken pox) got into my lungs (vericilla pneumonia). Nearly a month in the hospital and 10+ days on a ventilator. Best thing that ever happened health wise. If you never put another one in your mouth, soon you won't miss them at all. God bless and hang in there!

Congrats! Three years for me, and 50 lbs

For anyone thinking about quitting talk to your doctor about Chantix. This is a daily pill that removes the craving. It really works. Chantix is fairly expensive but cheaper than the cost of cigarettes.

Keep strong..........................Al

My wife and I both took it without problems but I have heard of some pretty serious side effects. However if you read warning labels on any med you will think twice about taking them.............Al

Clayton there was a time in my life that I felt the same way. When the time comes to make the decision to take meds or die, I suggest you will do what the rest of us do and take your medicine. As far as using drug therapy to quit smoking, possibly having some short term symptoms caused by the drug compared to the almost certain disastrous long term effects of smoking makes the drug a viable option IMO. I was able to quit cold turkey, but it took a while. What I'm saying is when making any serious decision there are pros and cons that have to be weighed. A 'one size fits all' answer is often too simple.

Good for you.

I used this to help me quit ~

Believe in yourself

Control your mind

Mentally turn away from your failures

Make right decisions

Know yourself

Never accept defeat

You must see it in your mind's eye,

before you can believe it

Accept your great future

Stay Strong.
