Thomas Klem Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 Lets see... I've lived in northern VA almost all my life. I just got back in to fishing with in the last two years, for the most part from shore. I am currently engaged in heavy negotiations with the wife on the subject of getting a boat and hopefully soon I will have her convinced. I do the majority of fishing either in the Potomac River between Prince William County and Washington D.C. my two most used rods are a Bass Pro Pro Qualifier on a Bass Pro 6'6" Crankin Stick medium (yeah I know they talked me in to it in the store) and I Quantam 1100 CXE on a Bass Pro Extreme 6'6" medium action. I hope to learn a lot from the folks on here and share the little bit of wisdom I have. Quote
endless Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 Welcome!! VA VA!! For getting back into fishing hell I think you got yourself a killer combo in the PQ and Crankin Stick. Wish you the best and welcome to the site! Quote
Thomas Klem Posted November 19, 2011 Author Posted November 19, 2011 endless.. thanks for the welcome. I noticed your from bowling green. Being an army brat I cut my bass fishing teeth at the base down there when I was about the same age as the little one in your pic. Awful lot of pond hopping to do there. Quote

endless Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 endless.. thanks for the welcome. I noticed your from bowling green. Being an army brat I cut my bass fishing teeth at the base down there when I was about the same age as the little one in your pic. Awful lot of pond hopping to do there. Talking about AP Hill?? If so I do allot of fishing there myself since I live next door to it. Still great fishing there. Also allot of secluded areas where I can't get my boat into cause of no ramp or launch and would love to explore some of those ponds by kayak access. I'm going to try and get myself a kayak soon for them. Some times I hate myself for selling my 11' jon boat. I could easily transport on top of vehicles and carry by hand. Can't beat AP Hill for $20 a year as long as record is clean since they do background checks now and have regular fishing license. I don't fish much in base like I want and when I do it's usually at Travis lake. My pic in avatar that you mention is my son at White's lake if no where that is. It's own by AP Hill but accessible off base traveling down Smoot's rd and Perimeter rd. Quote

Thomas Klem Posted November 19, 2011 Author Posted November 19, 2011 Hey Sam and Endless thanks for the welcome. I am hitting the Potomac tomorrow. Ill add some pics and a note if we have any success. I'm still figuring out the cold weather fishing but I think I hae a few ideas that might work... Endless I grew up fishing A.P Hill. I have a 12" jon that I used to throw in the back of my truck(before I sold the truck) and take down there. Travis is great from the boat and I've had a lot of luck at Bowies and Bullocka ponds. I havent fished Whites as I thought there were regulations on it being open due to training. I will definitely check it out. The kayak thing sounds like a great idea. Let me know if you come across any good deals. Quote
endless Posted November 20, 2011 Posted November 20, 2011 Yea at Bowies pond and Travis lake I have landed a 4.9 at each this year both on wacky 5" Senko Plum Apple. I never tried Bullocks want to just haven't. Whites lake, Smoots pond and Laser Range you must call ahead of time to see if are open due to training at those locations. I always call a day before their Game closing(I think it's 5pm) to see if any of those locations are open tomorrow so I don't have to sit around till the game open the day I'm trying to fish. Whites is nice but I haven't had much luck at. I heard there is nice bowfins in there. I haven't caught any of those yet at Whites just at Bowie which I hook two 4# on wacky and frog. I would love to hit Engineer pond since it's secluded by woods and 1 pull off area on the side of the road with no launch ramp. So it's going to be a boat or kayak you can carry and place in to fish. Yea I hate the fact now that I sold my 11' jon boat. The one I have now is my deck 14' in my sig that you see. The map this year was crazy I had no ideal they had all those ponds. Lunker Hole pond wasn't mention in last year map nor was like 20-30 of them ponds mention. I wish I could get a good .gif off so you can see the difference in listing compare to last year and this year. This year I also finally found out that Smoot's is two parts upper and lower but the map doesn't show this like I thought it would have, like it did Travis lake being two parts. I'm hoping next year I will fish more in the base than outside and been dying to hit Laser Range but it's always closed when I want to go. Good luck on the Potomac!! What you going for?? Quote
Thomas Klem Posted November 20, 2011 Author Posted November 20, 2011 I haven't fished Laser Range, Smoots or Whites. I've heard Beaver Dam is supposed to have some big fish but I've never had any luck. The one and only bowfin I've ever caught was at Bowies, probably 2#. I found a pic of my biggest bas out of the base at Bullocks. Caught it on a wacky rigged Senko in Pumkin orange if I remember correctly. I really wanna try to fish lower Travis from a boat and I have to imagine Lunker Hole might be good cause it's pretty seclued so I don't think it's probably seen a lot of pressure. My dad trained out there when he was in the army and he claims he still has other maps somewhere that show all the dirt roads and even more ponds that aren't on the normal map. I'm gto pick up gonna try to pick up a small trailer for my boat this winter so I can get it back down there again. We're going after LMB tomorrow at Belmont Bay and the Occoquan part of the river. I've heard there are also stripers to to be caught this time of year so that would be a bonus. Quote
endless Posted November 20, 2011 Posted November 20, 2011 Picture is small but look nice. I think the lower is the one with the launch so I landed a 4.9 there. Upper has no launch but landed a monster snapper from the bank once! Had to be over 40# or more if not full size for an American snapper. Beaverdam I fish from land since I feel no need for boat. You can walk the bank all around. If go to back of pond it's nothing but a beaverdam and lilies galore with stumps everywhere. The best I did was 3.5 on a Hula Popper. Unfortunately the bass didn't make it so I took it took Mikes Tackle shop snap a photo and gave him away to some people there. Also I did good good on a 3" silver/black rebel popper outside the lilies patches around the pond on Beaverdam. Nothing big though. did well for catfish there as well on minnows lol. I always wonder why it's called Beaverdam pond besides the beaverdam there but my god I never seen a monster Beaver that big as I saw there. At Whites you might see otters and bald eagles if go there. I did see both. Bald Eagle for sure but I'm sure the otter was for sure an otter at least in my eyes. If remember Mike's tackle shop or was even open then it is still open today! Good luck tomorrow. endless Posted November 20, 2011 Posted November 20, 2011 How you do today Thomas?? Did you go? Quote
Thomas Klem Posted November 21, 2011 Author Posted November 21, 2011 Glenn, thanks for the welcome.... Endless we got out late after switching the wheel bearings out on my buddy's boat trailer. I got two on a 1/4 pumpkin/black jig with a twin tail grub trailer. I fought oe out of a downed tree that might have been my best this year but I didn't have the drag setting right and just as I got him to the boat he rolled and got loose. Gonna hit it up again next Friday if the weather. How do you get multiple photos loaded without going over the size limit? Quote
endless Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 Well those photos are on my facebook page. I right click on the image, copy image location, and on the bassresource forum I use the insert image for my photos. I usually upload my photos on here in the gallery but I got lazy on the resizing. I think explains the uploading to the gallery and or posting photos. Quote
Thomas Klem Posted November 22, 2011 Author Posted November 22, 2011 Thanks for the tip and the link. I tried to search for the instructions last night and couldn't find them. I also couldn't get the photos off Facebook. For some reason I didn't get the option to copy location when I right clicked a photo. I did the same thing with my gallery on here in a separate window and it worked so I guess thats good. Have you fished A.P. Hill recently? I wondered how it would be in the late fall and winter. Bullocks Pond July 09 This one came out of the Occoquan Res near my house. Quote
endless Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 Wow both are nice. No I haven't hit A.P. Hill yet for the fall. Been meaning too been wanting to try the lilies since they're fading out now. I haven't been out for maybe a month and a half now. Quote
Thomas Klem Posted November 23, 2011 Author Posted November 23, 2011 If you get out let me know how it goes. I'm thinking about making a trip down there and it'd be nice to have a heads up. Quote
