SwampMan Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 I just bought a few rattle traps today. Those 1oz. are to big for me! Quote
rosewalt Posted February 28, 2007 Author Posted February 28, 2007 I hear ya but Im told in the early spring they work well Im going to look for the crome and blue. I thinking if I get bit I better have a net Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted February 28, 2007 Super User Posted February 28, 2007 I've used them for stripers here in CA and pirhanas in Brazil. Quote
Hawgin Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 I have been using some 3/4oz ones lately and I can't imagine using anything bigger than that. They will get the big fish to bite, and they cast about as far as any lure I've ever thrown. 1 oz would be pretty big, and would possible scare off a lot of small to medium sized fish. Quote
Super User T-rig Posted February 28, 2007 Super User Posted February 28, 2007 Yeah, but who wants to catch small fish? Big bait, big fish! (not allways of course) Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted February 28, 2007 Super User Posted February 28, 2007 Deep water bait. Quote
WidowMaker Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 There are way more little fish than there are trophy sized fish. Sometimes with the smaller baits a little fish will run in and grab it before the big ones have a chance to zero in on it. So if you use a bigger bait a lot of time the little ones will leave it alone which will give the bigger fish a chance to take it. Quote

Gorgebassman Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 I have used the 1oz baits in late winter early spring to fish deeper. The 1oz drops faster and great for fishing deep water chunk rock prior to spawn and transition patterns to spawn. In clear water I use anything silver and in darker water I use craw color patterns. Low_Budget_Hooker Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 They get even bigger too. We use these for stripers and blues, 1.25oz, 4" in bunker patterns but they can be found up to 5oz's I believe. (This is the lure I spent 4 hrs in the ER getting removed from my skull. I was always iffy about the stock hooks,..trust me,..they will penetrate bone. ) Quote
Hawgin Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 LBH- At least by taking it in the dome you didn't have to worry about risking permanent damage. : Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 It was the result of my supervisor from work being too excited, seeing boiling Blues for the first time. Work was cushy for a little while after that, lol. Quote

liquidsoap Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 Where you from in Ohio??? THere is only a few lakes I have success with rattletraps around here. No clue why, always just did better with a crankbait in most lakes.. But a rattletrap will be the first thing I throw in our first tournament. Quote

Low_Budget_Hooker Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 they are talking about hard plastic. rat-l-traps Quote
luv2fsh33 Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 Not sure how things work up north in Ohio but here on Lake Ouachita in Hotsprings a 1 oz. trap took 1st, 2nd and 3rd red craw pattern. Each stringer had one fish over 5lb.s(this was sunday 2/25/07) Wind was about 15- 20 with gust up to 30 mph. fish were about 10 to 15 feet and you had to slow roll on top of the grass to get a bite yoiu had to be sitting in about 20 to 25 ft of water though. air temp of about 46*and water about 45*.
