ok so I have fished twice with a friend of mine (once in front once in back of boat)

he has out fished me 14-0 on flipping jigs over 2 trips.

he is using a Luck e srike 3/8 football head black and blue jig from wal mart with a zoom chunk trailer

I am using a 3/8 alien head "alimony" northstar jig with a paca chunk trailer balack and blue or black and blue flake dipped in clear JJ's

this is driving me crazy cause we talk so much trash , LOL.

My only saving grace is I can pick up fish on a spinnerbait, later in the day..........but man there is nothing like catch fish on a jig!

If my buddy is outfishing me 14 zip, I'm not going to let stubborn pride stop me from switching to what he's using, even if it means begging one or more from him.

I've had guys with me who are catching next to nothing while I'm pulling them in one after another. I tell them I have plenty of extras, baits and hooks, of what I'm using only to hear no thanks. They are bound and determined they are going to make the fish want what they are using. Leaves me scratching my head.

It's also been the other way around. Doesn't take me long to ask if they have enough to spare me a few.

I had a similar experience before, when I was fishing on my buddy’s boat. He was throwing a ½ Jig on SK baby craw, and I was using the same Jig but different trailer. After the 10th fish, then I have asked him for a baby craw and got a hit on the 2nd cast. Now, I am a believer the trailer action do make a difference. Most of the time I use netbaits, but SK rage tail will do the trick “sometimes”.

The other day my friend and I were fishing jigs all day. One of us was dragging the jig with longer pauses (2-3 seconds) and occasional hop within retrieves. One of us was hopping it the whole retrieve with occasional very short pauses (less than a second). The hopping or quicker retrieve was the ticket that day. Same baits, two different retrieves, one productful, the other not so much. Same thing with flipping, qucker popping of the jig was more productive that day as well.

Some are just better fishermen than others. Better concept of where the fish lie in terms of cover, more accurate casters. I have a dear friend that I whip on a regular basis. He just doesn't put the lure where it's needed. Years ago we were fishing in Canada and I even got feeling bad since I was pulling fish in right and left. I took a break, had a coffee and back then probably smoked a cigerette of two. In that time he caught zero. I got tired on inaction and started to fish again and immediately caught fish.

Now it might have been there were no fish in the area covered during my break but I doubt it. When I'm on the front deck I make it a point no to hit every spot I think looks productive.

That's true, but there is no way to know if it's technique, or the bait, or perhaps, both. Find out if it's technique by using the same bait. Then, progress from there. Once the fish are found, it becomes a matter of bait and presentation. The guy getting whupped may actually have better technique, but is using a grossly inferior bait, as far as the fish are concerned, so he gets his butt handed to him.

I agree with Rhino that if what you are using is producing and I can't catch anything, I want one. Before I ask I will watch carefully. Sometimes a very slight difference in placement, speed, or cadence can make all the difference.

I have been on both sides of this many times. Stay focused and confident. It's all good.

had this happen to me yesterday. fished a team tourney with a friend. he was using an 1/8 oz black jig and I a 3/16. he had a black pork frog mine was black/blue. in the morning he smoked them. four nice fish off the bank within 20 mins of each other while I caught squat. both of us using the same technique etc. they just wouldn;t touch what I was throwing. unfortunately that was the last one he had or he would have given me one.

at the end of the day we ended up on the same spot. this time they were all over what I was tossing and not his. I definitely would have given him one if we didn't have a good limit and weren't running out of time fast. I'm not shy about asking for something or giving some something if it helps put fish in the boat.

had another situation like this while fishing with a member here(grampa) recently. went to one of his spots to fish in his boat. he was bailing fish on his secret weapon while I couldn't catch one to save my life. after a few fish he offered me one of what he was using. I kindly refused at first(was going to try to make what I had work). eventually I wanted to catch some fish and figured he had a great pattern going. I didn't have a rod to toss something that light so he even let me use a spare rod. I ended up catching a bunch of fish for the rest of the day and learning a new technique.

basically sounds like you need to pick up some of whatever he is using

A buddy and I constantly trade places where I'll catch 5 fish to his none and then vice versa. We're either gloating or scratching our heads. It seems to happen so regularly that we've come to expect it. So, unless you are constantly outfished, I wouldn't worry excessively about it. This isn't to say you can't/shouldn't modify your tactics to fit the pattern. I've known fishermen who will doggedly stick with a method or bait thinking that they can force the bass to bite. Just doesn't work that way.

He is a better jig fishman than me, of course I just started and he has been fishing for 8 years or more.and he has said it put in LOTS of time jig fishing

we talked a lot on the how and what of flipping a jig so I understand it.

and I actually did start to mimic him after a few fish lol

I think he does work it faster than me, or at least I know he did for the most part on the 2nd day.

he was actually impressed with how I could flip, given the time I have been fishing.

as far as baits, dont know, but I spent good money on Northstar jigs and refuse not to use themLOL.

I was just surprised more than anything to get my butt kicked that bad, and wanted to rant.

Brian I'm not familiar with the Northstar jig you mention, but I am a big fan of the Netbait Paca craws and chunks, as well as the Zoom chunks. The subtle movement of the Zoom chunk compared to the more aggressive movement of the Paca chunk could be the difference in getting bit. Don't get too infatuated with one bait (even if you did pay good money for it). Let the fish decide.

Jig fishing is one of those skills that takes time to learn. Enjoy the process. Good luck.

I'm not saying anything bad about JJ's, cuz I love the stuff and almost dip all my soft plastics into it. I have been using it for 3-4 years. I do recall one day fishing when I watched several fish pick it up and spit it and never pick it up again. I can't say for sure that it was the JJ's that particular day but, I did switch baits and ended up catching some fish later but, not until I switched to baits not dipped with the sauce. Could have been the sauce. Try it without and see. Maybe the fish are of the vampire variety

Jigs are my favorite, but just like any technique, more experience often leads to more success. The littlest of movements can make or break a jig bite. Watch his presentation closely...without him knowing you're taking notes and see what you're doing differently

went fishing with my friend and his tournament partner and caught 47.......I only caught 8.....BUT in the last 15 minutes I did change trailers to the ZOOM and hooked up and landed 4 of my 8 in 10 cast.

they would only peck and nibble the paca craw trailer, never taking the bait. but with the ZOOM they would suck it in and take it. I actually had my friend

fish with my stuff and he said WOW you are right they only tap it never take it.........

We all have those days, In our minds we say "yea he got one, but its only one, now if he gets another...."

I had a episode at Presque Isle bay about two years back.

We both got a few smallies early in the am, as the day progressed we ended up fishing in the perfect storm of prespawn hungry smallmouth.

The only trouble was for some reason I was cursed. My buddy is landing them like every other cast.

I start looking at his tube and its the same as mine.I ask him about the weight of the head again same. Same line ect ect...

For like an eternity I watched as my partner and every other boat in the area were whalaying fish, I saw small kids with scooby doo rods with fish flopping on the bank. Everywhere I looked people were hooked up. I could'nt help but too laugh, but I kept my head down and my nose to the grindstone and finally caught one on a jerkbait and that released the gorilla from my back. When fishing is tough (and it usually is) I draw upon that experience.

Hey man, I have been taken to school, by a good buddy of mine, fishing soft plastic creature baits (that he poured) and outfishing me 7 or 10, to my one ! He would even let me take the front of the boat at times... or ask me to, and still whacked them ! Same lures, same weight, same depth, etc.

He always said that everybody gets nearly as many hits, but many are so incredibly light, that many / most anglers never notice.... Like myself on those night trips, I guess. But he noticed the bites !

But it's all good I probably need to get my arse kicked once in a while, to keep me in line LOL

Hey Deep, their is an old video, by Glen Lau, called "Bigmouth". If I'm not mistaken, this is the video that shows lures being sucked in, and spit out multiple times, and the anglers above never having a clue ! {of course we are all saying..... yea', but maybe those guys suck LOL ......and, I bet they were not using braided super-line either LOL

I saw that video and yes, pretty amazing footage and never would believe they could inhale a crankbait and spit it without getting the hook caught up in the least bit of way. If bass can suck and spit a lure out this quick, I believe that it is probably true, alot of fisherman get bit and may never know it.
