Tennesseecrankbaiter Posted November 14, 2011 Posted November 14, 2011 Is there anyone in the Middle Tn area that would be willing to help out a newbie? I have been Bass fishing for a year now and my PB is a 4.9 large mouth on Spencer creek on Old Hickory. Caught with a Bandit 100 series babybass back in the summer. What is the best lure to use in the winter months? I am not a fair weather fisherman, I fish all year long. Any help would be great, I am just now learning to use plastic baits such as a Zoom speed craw and have been doing very well with them on Priest. I am 51 and a High School teacher in Lebanon, Tn. I have a Stratos bass boat but it is small with a 70 hp. I will pay for gas if I fish on somone elses boat...I just want to learn what to do with this new passion of mine...Thanks! Quote

Well I can't help you with being on the boat but if I may offer you some advise. Read all of the fishing articals on techniques in here at the top of the page, get a topo map of your favoite lake, look for areas such as drop off's like an old creek bed close to some primary points strap on a Carolina rigged lizzard,I like using a 1 oz sliding weight above the swivel with about a 2 ft leader (depending on the depth the fish are suspended at)in about 20 feet of water or more and try throwing a spinner if your in less than 20 feet of water, stay parallel with the drop and look for some sort of cover on the structure you are fishing and work that area first. Good luck and be safe!!! Quote
Big Al23 Posted November 18, 2011 Posted November 18, 2011 Don, I don't know what winter is like there but right now up here in Mass the water temps are in the 40's. The largemouth are still hitting spinnerbaits. A couple of lures you should have no matter where you fish are a jig and a grub. Jigs will catch fish almost anytime, anywhere. My favorite plastic is a 5" Kalin grub rigged weedless on a Slider Spider jighead. I catch a lot of fish with it and the smallies love it. It's a great sport no matter what age you get into it! Good luck. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted November 20, 2011 Super User Posted November 20, 2011 If you are interested in smallmouth, we can hook-up on the Tennessee River below Pickwick Dam. If you have a flexible schedule, let's pick a weekday when we know the TVA will have good release. -Kent a.k.a. roadwarrior Quote
comescrashing Posted November 27, 2011 Posted November 27, 2011 i fished preist often when i was up there and old hickory some. Out of my past experience aome of the most fun you can have is wading creeks for smallies just a little west of nashville. I plan on moving back up that way in the next year and maybe we can hook up Quote
