I'm going to nip this feud in the bud.

I agree with Dan and Koopa. I use 50lb Power Pro for my frog fishing now but I used to use 17lb Trilene XT and never had a breakoff. If I had one hang me up, I'd go in and get him. Literally. Once I could not reach down to the fish so I jumped in and came out wit a fat 4 pounder.

The key is as Dan said, get his head up and keep him coming.

I throw the Rage Shad, my new favorite bait, on 17 lb. Trilene Big Game and have had no problems. I seem to get longer casts with the lighter Shads than with braid.

Exactly. Before I had a dedicated jig/frog rod I fished frogs with 15lb Hybrid (breaking strength around 20lb) and I never once lost a fish. Now I have more rods so I put 50lb braid on that rod and made it my jig and frog rod. I feel more confident now with the heavy braid but it's entirely possible to fish frogs on heavy mono.

I've literally jumped in after a bass but that was after a 3 pounder buried me in weeds with 8 pound test.

If I have to go to line stronger than 14 pound test I use braid because you get the strength without extra diameter and you can cast further. I think braid doesn't backlash as bad as mono does. If you get a knot though you are screwed.

Thick braid is the way to go for regular frogs. In really clear water use a 20 pound clear mono leader. Don't use fluoro as a leader for any topwaters because it sinks.

you can forget me jumping in the fish aint worth lol. not from the bowfins, pickerels, and that 3 foot snapping turtle i done caught, that's enough to keep me out their waters. god im afraid to know what else is in there. maybe another champ??

im in a tournament soon and plan on throwing the spros, love them, but this is really the first time im ever gonna be fishing Lily Pads. I have Yo Zuri Hybrid 20lb test line on my reel, do you think I should go up to 25 or 30 pound? I am afraid to throw braid cause i still birds nest quite a bit and cant afford the mess and time in this tournament. Thanks all

When getting birds nest you are going to do it with braid the exact same as you are with Mono, so I would go with the braid.

I like the spro frogs but they tend to take in some water, so I am putting caulk and gorilla glue over the hook hole and then cutting a small slit in the top as per someone suggested on this forum.

I have thought about trying something like that.  However I have noticed a lot of times when I catch fish with the Spro the body has compressed and exposed more of the hook.  It seemed that essentially the body compresses turning and getting out of the way of the hook.  If you try the caulk/gorilla glue trick can ya give some updates how it works out for ya?

You all are making me think that maybe I should go braid.  I have just heard before that braid is nearly impossible to get out if you get a backlash.  I plan on using this rod for jigs and frogs in the tournament, so what line do you think i should look at getting?  Im gonna try to go  out before the tournament and practice if i do end up with braid.  This is the biggest tournament I will maybe ever be in, so I need to be very confident.  Any suggestions of baits to flip to the pads on other rods? YOu guys are very helpful, thanks!!!!!!

Simple solution, don't get a back lash, LOL! I actually think the opposite of braid. It is much easier to Pick a backlash out with it! Braid is all i use for frogs in or near vegetation. I would pitch ribbon tail worms and craw lures with the smallest weight you can get away with. I have found that targeting isolated clumps of pads near main fields produce bigger fish. If the water is dark use scents and rattles and slow down the retrieve.

that im not sure but a guy told me throw a big sticko in the pads so ima give it a shot tomorrow mine is 7 1/8 i think. .

i just got me a depth finder put on the jon boat so in the morning hit the pads with frogs and stickos than go deep when heat hits (post to be 100 degrees) and seen if can learn the structures and find the bigger boys.i got everything i need for carolina rigging. i will betrying the anacondas out got the big and small size. i might toss a few jigs too.

but yea try the briad it shouldnt take long to figure out. just keep adjusting it till it feels right to you.
