I have a couple of the Spro JR in the Black/Yellow, Brown and the green and yellow. I'm fishing them on a 6'6" XML MH with 30# Fireline Smoke.

I keep having trouble getting hook ups though. Last time out I actually watch the fish take it on a meduim retrieve and take it under and felt the weight of the fish but when I set the hook I just got my lure back.

Should I have waited longer or did I wait too long?

(not trying to jack the thread but its the same frog)

When the fish strikes, I give it a 1...2 SWING! You need to hit them hard enough to compress the bait. Also make sure the frog doesn't have any water in it, that will make compression more difficult.

Thanks Dan and yeah it did have water in it so I'll have to make sure it doesn't when I'm out with it next time.

I honestly don't think the color matters all that much. It looks pretty much the same from below anyway, IMO. I fish hollow bodied frogs in slop with thick vegetation and/or lily pads so I fish it on 50lb braid.

X2 Right on the head for me. I've caught fish on every color frog I own and have not found one to be better than the other. I throw them into the nastiest stuff I can find and the fish probably just feels the commotion and sees the trail. I use Snagproof Bobby's Perfect in the heavy stuff and ScumFrog Trophy in lighter stuff. I feel Spro's are too stiff. JMHO. Scumfrogs are a great alternative and cost $3.00 less. Very soft though and will snag up if you are fishing in reeds or other emergent vegetation.

Give the Spro Jr. a try.  I haven't noticed any difference in the quality of fish I catch and the body is much softer making hookups much better.  A buddy of mine gave me another tip for increasing hookups....upgrade the size of the hooks.  I think the standards Spros have 4/0 hooks that you can upgrade to 6/0 Owners and the Jrs have 3/0 that you can upgrade to 4/0.  I ordered some 6/0 to try out so I'll report back after I've had the chance to use them.

I like the spro jr. in natural green frog. I throw it on 50 pound power pro.

I have the spro popper and the lure pretty much is like any other topwater popper style bait, I've only had it on the water once but no success with it so far.

Depends on where you are fishing.

Leopard and white are productive.

Get one and give it a try.  :P

Honestly, I don't see the point of paying more for a bait and then taking the time and expense to change out the hooks. JMHO. To each his own. I do own and use Spro's, I just prefer the Snagproof and Scumfrog.

Most of the guys in here change out the treble hooks on their crankbaits.  If the hookups are better, that's plenty enough reason for me.  I don't lose many fish on the Spro Jr so I'm not sure that it's necessary, but I don't think it will hurt anything either.  The regular size Spro is a different story, the plastic is too stiff IMO.  I have also fished the Snagproof Bobby's Perfect Frog and still prefer the standard size Spro over it.  The Snagproof sank on every cast, but who knows, maybe I got a bad one.

you asked about other frogs to try , try CANYON PLASTICS 4.5'' frog , they cast VERY far , can fish them slow or fast , they slowly sink and cause they have a pointy nose , you can jerk them like a fluke and they dart around then glide . i've been killing them lately on these , i used to use them a few years ago but couldn't find any more locally ( didn't have the computer yet ) but now a semi-local tackle shop stocks them so every time i go to the seminars they have each month ( this month Randy McAbee form team Dobyns is speaking about crankbaits ) at this shop , i buy 4-5 bags !!!

im in a tournament soon and plan on throwing the spros, love them, but this is really the first time im ever gonna be fishing Lily Pads.  I have Yo Zuri Hybrid 20lb test line on my reel, do you think I should go up to 25 or 30 pound?  I am afraid to throw braid cause i still birds nest quite a bit and cant afford the mess and time in this tournament.  Thanks all

I like the spro frogs but they tend to take in some water, so I am putting caulk and gorilla glue over the hook hole and then cutting a small slit in the top as per someone suggested on this forum.

to me if using a smaller version of baitcaster 30 lb mono may be to big of diameter. i use 30 lb on my big boys. i would just go ahead and get the braid and work the adjustments till you get the feel for it. and braid seems to come out from bird nesting very easy so far for me at least.

If you are fishing pads, you want 65# braid. No questions asked no exceptions.

Tighten the tension knob or something... I don't really see what the difference is between birds nesting with braid or with mono, takes equal effort to get it out.

Shouldn't be fishing a tournament with gear your not comfortable and confident in.

I don't agree with that. It's not going to be optimal, but you could get away with 20lb Hybrid, just make sure you get the fish to the surface as quick as possible.

Well, the break point of a lilly stem is around 16-18# if I remember correctly, get a 4-5# fish on there wrapped around 1 stem and your in trouble.  Not to mention if he dives and gets around 2 stems or add in the slop...

I'm going to have to respectfully disagree Dan, The 20lb hybrid may be sufficient for recreational angling, but in a tournament situation there is no way I would touch it fishing frogs.
