JEC Posted November 13, 2011 Posted November 13, 2011 looking for feedback from people who have used one or both of these reels Quote
38 Super Fan Posted November 13, 2011 Posted November 13, 2011 I just picked up Tourny Pro, outstanding reel. Early, but I think it has an edge over my Patriarch and Revo SX, both of which I like very well. I don't have any experience with the smoke, I had a lemon Quantum spinning reel a while back, just haven't gotten back to Quantums since. Quote
ChiCityBasser Posted November 13, 2011 Posted November 13, 2011 I don't have the Smoke reel but will be adding a Smoke casting and spinning reel to my lineups for next spring. After reading a review on TW and talking with guys that have them they are great reels and very light as well after handling both at Cabelas. Here is another review also: http://www.worldfishingnetwork.com/gear/reviews/quantum-smoke-pt-32649.aspx Quote
flippin and pitchin Posted November 13, 2011 Posted November 13, 2011 I have not used a Smoke. I do own 2 Tourny Pros and 2 Tourny models. They perform exceptionally well. I actually prefer the Pro over my Revo Premiers. Both models are great casters, easy to palm and super smooth during retrieves. It may just get down to personal preference for you. Quote
JEC Posted November 14, 2011 Author Posted November 14, 2011 ya still need to fondle them both to tell for sure the reviews on these are pretty close but starting to lean toward the smoke Quote
Bassohol Posted November 14, 2011 Posted November 14, 2011 My fishing partner just switched from Smokes to Tourney Pros. I mean, a BIG switch. He was an all Quantum guy until he used a Lew's for a day. He dumped all of his Quantums and ordered 14 Tourney Pros. I got to try them out this weekend, and I don't think there is a comparison. The Lew's is a better palming, better casting, smoother reel in my opinion. Now, take that for whatever you think it's worth, because I've never liked Quantum reels. However, I did like the Smoke alright. It's the best caster Quantum has ever made, I think. Yet, the Lew's just blew the Smoke out of the water. Quote
Scorpio Posted November 17, 2011 Posted November 17, 2011 I have owned both. I sold the Smoke. In my opinion, the Tournament Pro is a much better performer for light and heavy baits. Read the TT review of the Smoke. They are correct, it does not handle light baits well. Quote
ChiCityBasser Posted November 17, 2011 Posted November 17, 2011 From the TW review: Casting: The Smoke reels are good casters, especially with the heavier stuff. The reels make use of the proven ACS cast control system which is an externally adjustable centrifugal system. I’ve found that this system is good for the complete range of weights and in free mode really allows anglers to get the distance they want on larger heavier baits. Just make sure to properly feather that spool as “free” mode really is just that, and if you are not careful you’re going to waste valuable fishing time picking out nasty backlashes. A closer look at the main gearing During the field tests we found the Smoke good for casting weightless rigged plastics and excellent for casting heavier baits including big cranks, ripbaits and swimbaits. The 105 class reels proved to be superb at handling large Luhr Jenson Woodchoppers in the Amazon and the ability make changes to the centrifugal system without dissembling the reel is a major plus. Super User J Francho Posted November 17, 2011 Super User Posted November 17, 2011 I've only handled two Smoke reels, a 100 and 150. They both had issues out of the box. They had to be sent back to Quantum for replacement. Since the Lew's is essentially part of the Pure Fishing group that makes some proven models - Floogers, Revos, etc., I'd go that route, if it's down to those two brands. My own personal preference would be for a Daiwa in a similar price range. Quote
barroncooper Posted November 17, 2011 Posted November 17, 2011 I've got a smoke 150 7.3:1 and yes it casts very well with the heavy stuff. I got one for my trap rod and decided to try it out on my worm rod and was very disappointed. It simply will not handle light stuff. it also feels like it sits a little higher on the reel seat than my curados. If I were in your situation I'd have to go with the Lews reel. Quote
WanderLust Posted November 17, 2011 Posted November 17, 2011 I've used both and currently own a Lews Tourney pro. I prefer the Lews, it performed great all season. That being said, its currently for sale in the flea market but I'm just thinning the herd a bit. Quote
