OHIO Posted November 4, 2011 Posted November 4, 2011 Checking a serpentine belt to see if it was tight. The kid started the truck with my finger on the belt and it came off. Going to urgent care tomorrow. Anyone had something similar happen? Quote
Super User grimlin Posted November 4, 2011 Super User Posted November 4, 2011 Ouch,I ripped off mine when i was skateboarding.Going down this steep hill and somehow my middle finger went under the wheel and ripped it clean off.It did grow back just fine. Looking at your story, you are lucky you didn't wrap your hand into it. You could have lost much more than a thumb nail. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted November 4, 2011 Super User Posted November 4, 2011 Yep, I've done it, also lost a big toe nail. They come back. So, what did you do to the dude that started the engine? Quote
Super User deaknh03 Posted November 4, 2011 Super User Posted November 4, 2011 Yep, I've done it, also lost a big toe nail. They come back. So, what did you do to the dude that started the engine? A nail for a nail? That's biblical right? Quote
Super User J Francho Posted November 4, 2011 Super User Posted November 4, 2011 Well, it has to fit the crime. I say he loses his thumb nail on a belt sander, LOL. Quote
Super User deaknh03 Posted November 4, 2011 Super User Posted November 4, 2011 I have psoriasis, and when I was a kid it got under my pointer finger nail. My mom took me to the Dr, and he used a very special tool to remove my nail, he used a friggin pair of pliers. He numbed it and pulled the nail off while I watched. My mom heard the screams from the waiting room. Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted November 4, 2011 Super User Posted November 4, 2011 Don't ask me why I know this But . . . . The matrix is the living, growing tissue beneath the hard nail bed. It's what supplies the blood and nutrients to the nail. If it's damaged then the nail will take longer to grow out or in some cases not at all, but that's pretty rare. A severe crushing blow to the nail would be an example of a nail not being able to grow back. Most nails will grow back just fine when only a nail is lost. It just takes some time and Keep an Eye out for Infections. A-Jay Quote
Super User K_Mac Posted November 4, 2011 Super User Posted November 4, 2011 As A-Jay said damage to the nail bed can be permanent. I ripped/cut off half the nail on my right index finger when I was about 10 years old. I have two nails and a scar down my finger where it was cut. It looks relatively normal, unless you look closely. I was standing next to a guy when he lost both thumb nails on a big circular disk sander back in a former life. He was sanding the edges of a small plate with too large a gap between the wheel and table. It was not pretty. Both nails grew back just fine though. Glad you weren't hurt more seriously. Quote
OHIO Posted November 4, 2011 Author Posted November 4, 2011 Ill get a pic next time I take the bandage off. It really sucked taking it off this morning because it kind of stuck to the dried blood. That might have hurt more than when it actually happened. Quote
Trever Posted November 4, 2011 Posted November 4, 2011 You're very lucky you didnt lose your finger. Seen it happen at work before. Buddy had a rag around his hand was checking the trans fluid on a car and the rag got pulled into the belt. Lost the tip of his index finger... Quote
royal0014 Posted November 4, 2011 Posted November 4, 2011 Smashed my pinky between a rolling rack and metal door frame. First thing the Dr. did was pull the nail off '...you're not gonna need that'. Grew back arched and curved. Looks kinda like a talon. Makes for a good booger-picker Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted November 4, 2011 Global Moderator Posted November 4, 2011 I've lost a thumbnail that got smashed between cinder blocks, fell and tore off an index fingernail jogging, and I split my right toenail down the middle playing football. My right big toenail never grew back right, it is still split down the middle from the end of the toe to the back of the nail and another nail tries to grow on top of it. Usually it doesn't hurt too bad but sometimes it gets to hurting pretty bad. Quote
Super User deaknh03 Posted November 4, 2011 Super User Posted November 4, 2011 Pretty gnarly. I like how the pic says "attached thumbnail". Not quite. 1 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted November 6, 2011 Super User Posted November 6, 2011 I just cut the tip of my index finger off cleaning a steelhead. That was pretty! Quote
