deviantek Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 Any ideas on this one? Caught 7 of these guys in a 3 hour timespan yesterday evening in a small lake near Lake Tecumsah next to the ocean in Virginia. The lake is more or less cut-off from the canals and everything else. Making it semi land-locked brackish water. The only other fish that I've caught in the lake are bluegills. Looks like some sort of spotted smallmouth... but then the length of the anal fin seems longer then usual, and the spots stay even all the way through the fins. Help! Thanks, Erich Quote
North Ga Hillbilly Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 Did you measure the first one? there both good lookin, the first is a serious slab for sure Quote
CSimon2 Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 You caught a crappie using a crappie swimbait. Those are some nice looking slabs!!!!! Quote
deviantek Posted November 3, 2011 Author Posted November 3, 2011 Ah, go figure! I'm pretty new to the fishing gig. Never seen a crappie this large and slender shaped. The largest was about 18 inches Quote
North Ga Hillbilly Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 great catches, an 18" crappie is a wall hanger in some parts Quote
Hamby Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 Around here, 18" is a freaking monster. 16" are wall hangers haha. I don't know about your area though. Maybe they're more common. Nice fish no matter what. Quote

RyneB Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 Nice Crappies. I read the topic, then saw the crappies and my mouth hit the floor. That 18 incher would be on my wall. The biggest one iv ever caught was 16 inches caught on a redeye. Quote
northern basser Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 Slab crappies and GREAT eating! Jeff x2. great fish to eat. Especially when you can catch some decent sized ones. Quote
basscrusher Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 an 18" crappie is a monster anywhere on this planet. In VA, 15" is a citation (trophy) for crappie. If I were you, I'd milk that honeyhole and keep it secret. Quote

Went out to day for 3 hours, and caught 9 within that time. The largest today was a 14". Today they were the meal, and tasty they were! Some very clean fish! Thanks for the comments on my non-bass fish everyone! Quote
TaaNop Posted November 4, 2011 Posted November 4, 2011 That's a black perch, retarget pretty huge in NW Louisiana, esp below the spillway on lake Bistineau when it's really cold. I don't know if I've seen one that size personally though. The state record is six pounds flat. Quote
TaaNop Posted November 4, 2011 Posted November 4, 2011 Stupid iPhone, I didn't say retarget I said they get. Sorry bout that. Quote

Hamby Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 Talk about beginners luck! I'm willing to bet that you won't catch another that big...ever. The odds are in my favor with that bet. Quote
