lynyrdsky1 Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 It is time for me to suck it up and just go with it. Unlike my sibiling I have a choice where to go for college. It is between mississippi state, alabama, and lsu(I got in by the way). I would love to go to lsu but financially alabama is going to be the better choice. I can get instate tuition at alabama through a certain scholarship and im going to take it. Im going to have to get a job in college and maybe student loans to pay the rest but its what I got to do. It's time for me to stop complaining and go on with my life and this is really been a simpilar decision than what I thought it was going to be. Thanks guys for all the help and input its mean't alot. Roll tide!!! Austin 2 Quote

Super User 00 mod Posted November 2, 2011 Super User Posted November 2, 2011 Whatever you do, TRY and go to college without student loans! You will regret it for the 10 years after college........ Look for every financial aid/grant/scholarship you can! Jeff Quote

Super User J Francho Posted November 2, 2011 Super User Posted November 2, 2011 What do you mean "your parents won't"? They have to. Quote
tyrius. Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 I got scholarship and am hoping for financial aid but im going to have to file for myself parents won't. Man, if they can't be bothered to fill out a simple financial aid application to help you better your life then I don't know what use they'll ever be to you. That's pretty pathetic. Quote
Super User Root beer Posted November 2, 2011 Super User Posted November 2, 2011 I got scholarship and am hoping for financial aid but im going to have to file for myself parents won't. Not sure how that's going to work..You'll be in a pinch when you try to get a student loan and cannot get a co-signer. Your financial aid will be base upon your parents' income. If they wish not to put their incomes or co-sign on your loans or FASFA, tell them not to even bother claiming you as a dependent on their tax return. No point in them getting a slight tax break if they wish not to support you in college. By the way, all of your student tickets to Alabama games has to be shared with me. Roll Tide! Quote

tyrius. Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 Please clarify about your parents , your statement makes them look very bad in other peoples eyes. Why should he have to clarify? There are multiple posts on this board showing exactly what his parents think of his college plans. Are you going to make it worse by not believing him? 1 Quote
lynyrdsky1 Posted November 2, 2011 Author Posted November 2, 2011 Yea sorry bout that. They do not think we will qualify for anything so they think its pointless for applying for financial aid. things can change hopefully so they may do it but as of right now I have to fill out the fasfa. Quote

Are you going to make it worse by not believing him? He is right. You don't know my parents and taking my personal view isn't always the right thing. Most of the time I say things in confusion and probably most of the time they are correct. Its actually wrong for me to right what I do write about them because they have done so much for me and I should appriciate that. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted November 2, 2011 Super User Posted November 2, 2011 They do not think we will qualify for anything so they think its pointless for applying for financial aid. You cannot get a loan until they apply. It doesn't matter that they won't qualify. Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted November 2, 2011 Super User Posted November 2, 2011 Do yourself a favor and go talk to the appropriate people at the college, they are there to help. I doubt you will discuss anything they have never seen before. They can give you to best advice on how to proceed. The most important thing is do not give up because the task may be hard, the best things in life are the things you worked hardest for. Quote
Super User Root beer Posted November 2, 2011 Super User Posted November 2, 2011 I don't know what scholarship you got, but I'm 99.999999% they'll still need a FASFA...I got a scholarship before they even saw my parents' income and they still needed it for their record. After they told me I was award a scholarship, then turned in my FASFA, I went from a full-ride to a tuition only. Ah well. P.S. It sounds like your parents don't understand financial aid. Take it from us that been through it. All schools generally wants a FASFA regardless of whether you get a loan, scholarship, or not. It'll take you 15 minutes top to fill it all out.. Quote

It's all part of the application process. Quote

Helluva_Engineer Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 Hey, Don't really know the history here as far as what field you're looking into and the whole parental situation (think I saw it during my lurking, but didn't commit it to memory). However, to echo other sentiments and add my own 2 cents: 1) You're going to need to fill out a financial aid application. 2) Student loans suck, pay them off as soon as possible. I paid mine off during college which leads to #3. 3) Co-op/internships. They're paid and they help you get a fantastic job after college. I wouldn't be employed without my 2 co-ops. I also would have 10k in student loans. Plan ahead to get one your first summer in school and save save save. Use that money for your ramen budget throughout the next semester and pay whatever you have left over to the student loans you used to get through your first year. Rinse, repeat 4 times and take the 5 year plan to graduate debt free with experience. Trust me. I've got more tips to make college awesome if you'd like. Quote

Tough love never hurt nobody Filing for financial aid is just a required step in the process of going to college. It's not a status thing, or statement about how you are going to pay. Everyone fills out the forms. PITA, but so is everything else about applying. Quote
Hyrule Bass Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 if you qualify for student loans and accept them, dont let them sit around and build interest after college like i did(whether you graduate or drop out). i never paid nothing on my student loans for a couple years. then one day i get a letter in the mail stating they took my federal income tax return...and i still went years without paying, letting them take my tax returns. they used several various collection agencies trying to collect. i always ignored them. then a couple years ago they finally started sending me an actual bill with a minimum payment amount. after years of garnishing my tax returns i owed just short of $300. i might have paid over the years had they sent me bills like this earlier on. but anyways i finally paid it off in one lump some once i got a couple of the bills. i got my first federal income tax return in like 10 years and i was thrilled. those student loans dont go away, ever. they charge interest once youre outta school for a certain time period. they will find you and get their money one way or the other, you cant hide from them seemingly. just something to be aware of Quote
Brian Needham Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 Do not bescared of student loans, they are not that bad. Most times, you do not have to start paying until 6 months after you grad. Also, most times you get 5 years of payment forbearance. All in all,I took all my forbearance time and really didn’t rack up that much interest. Owed justshort of 18K and have a payment of $100 a month at 3.5% interest. More oftenthan not, the horror stories you hear are people that planned on defaulting onthe loan from the get go and simply refuse to pay. Good luck Austin. 1 Quote
tyrius. Posted November 4, 2011 Posted November 4, 2011 Do not bescared of student loans, they are not that bad. I'd agree completely. I'm still paying on one of my loans and the interest rate is both tiny and tax deductible so I'm not even considering paying it off any sooner than I have to. If I could extend it, I probably would.
