I was wondering if this is the highest gear ratio that it comes in or does anyone know of anything higher that's available?

If 6.2:1 is the highest, what reel would you recommend?

Thanks

You have to consider inches per turn, or IPT. This is a function of gear ratio, and more importantly, spool diameter. In other words, your "fastest" spinner is likely a 4:1 8000 series saltwater reel, not a 6:1 2500 series reel.

Thanks for the input, helped tremendously

I see many reels at 30-35 inches per turn @ 6.2:1

IPT tells the story, gear ratio is only a number. My question is why the need to take up line so fast? I know you mostly fish from shore in ponds and canals as I do, burning your lures back you are only over working them, you're going to get way less less strikes. I catch the bulk of my bass on a jerk and pause, you certainly don't need a fast reel for jigs. Even when I use cranks my speed is moderate and I always vary. If a hi speed retrieve is important, use a b/c. As francho said about an 8000 reel, I have several and I don't burn them back either and out there you are dealing with faster swimming fish for the most part.

I'd buy a spinning reel that sits well on my rod, is smooth, with a decent drag and my eye likes it. I have never bought a spinning reel fresh or salt based on gear ratio.

I don't know if this would help, but I appreciate the added IPT of my CI4 reels when dealing with deep smallie fishing. Once they're hooked, they will sometimes swim right up to the boat faster than you can reel up slack. The faster reels help in this manner. Plus, it's quicker when you reset your drop or drift.

Something for top water frogging. I have knuckle pain from using casting rods...my form obviously but I can fish with spinning no problems in the interim while my hand calms down.

I can use floating frogs like Stanley floating ribbits to compensate. I'm new so advice is definitely welcomed

I would use it for other things as well but something that can work the buzz frogs well is key

Thanks

Up until recently, Shimano reels tended to have higher IPT numbers than Daiwa. I looked at the specs for some of Daiwa's new spinning reels, and they appear to have closed the gap.

There are no smallmouth bass here, ponds are usually less than 15' in the deepest spot and the canals are 6' or less. LMB often will swim towards you when hooked, but they are not going on warp speed, pretty easy to handle here. I really don't think one needs a quick retrieve on spinning gear down here for bass, on the rare occasion I do I just reel faster.

I have set up quite a few people with MH or H spinning rods (not always easy to find, St. Croix has a AVS70MHF) and 4000 series Stradic spooled up with 40# braid for toads and frogs. You can even replace the oiled felt washers with dry Carbontex drag washers for even more power. It works great.

i agree with the bolded part for sure(not that i disagree with the rest). Most of my reels are spinning reels, and ive used them all for most everything. frogs no problem, i successfully fish them with an abu garcia cardinal 104 with 12lb trilene xl on a 7ft M ugly stik. the other side of that, ive also successfully fished frogs and numerous other artificials on a zebco 33 combo with 8lb line. to be honest i dont even know what the gear ratio is on most of my reels, dont really care. i dont put much stock on specialized rods and reels. like when i can use the same ugly stik for plastics, cranking, drop shots, jigs etc and be successful at it, just dont see the need to have a dedicated cranking stick, a senko rod, a drop shot rod, a jig rod, etc when i have success doing all that on one cheap rod. its kinda the same with reels, i really dont care what the gear ratio or ipt is.

that zebco 33 i mention above, once hooked into a 40+lb flathead at the lake, thing swam right at me really fast, i just reeled faster. now i didnt land it, but i was able to get it up and see it roll on top the water before snapping my line.

its often why i think people overthink what they need to catch fish. i'd prefer to spend more time finding the fish than worried about how fast my reel turns

I got a pflueger president, it cost me 1.02 after the credit I had. Just need a rod now. Thanks for the help. My spinning setups are and have been cheap walmart diawa combos that catch me fish. I like to fish frogs at times and people have told me to use a fast gear ratio so I assumed it was the same on the spinning since Ive never used frogs until I got my casting setup. Ill try it out once I get a decent rod. The more you read the more confused you can get. I usually keep it simple for the most part

Me neither, but now that I own two higher speed reels, I will look at the spec when considering a future purchase, based on what I noticed on the water.
