Who makes the best an what temp water do you start using them?

The best will depend a lot on the body of water you fish, water temp, clariy, and other factors. I like Lucky Craft pointer 78 in fairly clear water between about 50-60, which is most of my jerkbait fishing. In colder water I like the Xcalibur Erratic shad or the old standby Smithwick Rogue. The Megabass Vision is another very popular bait but at $25 a pop they're out of most peoples budget. Rapala X-raps are also a pretty decent bait but in my book I'd rather spend the few dollars extra on a pointer. Normally 45-60 degree water is when I break out the jerkbaits but they can be good all year long in the right conditions.

I do quite well on the original Rapala still. I start using them as soon as season opens around here at the end of April, but don't use them quite so much through the summer. Unless I head north and do some smallmouth river fishing.

I like the LC Pointer SP 100, very good bait for the money, if you are looking to pay less than what a LC costs, take a look at the H2O series of baits by Academy Sports, they have a great finish and good hooks, most cost in the 5-6 dollar range. They also suspend well.

As far as when to fish one, a jerk bait can actually be fished year round. Most people only throw them when the water cools off which most of the time goes along with the shad kill in the lake. Jerk baits generally do excel during this period. A lot of people over look them other time of the year with different presentations. I have fished bigger JB in the spring and used an aggressive jerk-jerk-short pause repeat. I've also fished them around docks in the summer time and just slowly reeled them in with the occialsional pause thrown in. They are truely a versital hard bait that gets over looked during certain times of the year.

All what you prefer. For me it's an original suspending Rogue. Right after ice out they work very well. I don't fish jerkbaits at all in the summer [maybe a floating Rapala] and use more spinnerbaits in the fall.

You can't go wrong fishing a 78sp or Rougue in 1-5 ft. , and an LC Staysee in 6-10 ft.
