For a week.

Leaving in about 8 hours with my church heading to Haiti to build houses and doctor the sick.

Prayers appreciated.

There are people here that need houses and doctoring. I never could understand why Americans feel more obligataed to take care of the rest of the worlds poor before our own.

Well I'm done with my soapbox now. Have fun.

Good luck.

Can I assume that this is a continuing mission to help out after the earthquake?

Not to pick on anybody, but we are lucky to have an organization like FEMA here that provides much more relief after a disaster than many countries could afford. There are a number of other charities that help low income people like the one organization we have here in my home county. Home builders and college students gather to help upgrade many older low income homes with new windows, insullation, and even a fresh coat of paint. While it would be nice that every American can live the dream, we have the ability to help others, and should do so.

Here's hoping that your efforts will help a few families down there to move on towards a better life.

I have a friend who goes to Haiti every year for a couple of weeks to help repair/build housing.

For those who question why don't we help those here "at home" rather than those outside of the U.S.A., what's the difference? A person in need is a person in need.

Isn't the term "fellow man" inclusive of all regardless where they happen to reside?

It is good to do good, regardless of where it is done.

The type of help he is able to give in Haiti would probably get him sued here.

Yes, guys charity begins at home. My guess is Bass_Finatic's church does mission work in the local community, as well as trips to other countries. Getting off the couch and working with other believers to help make a difference in the lives of people is the work of the church. Trips to other countries where deprivation is common gets more attention, but I know many folks who have been helped, and are being helped by local churches, right here at home. Let's not make this a religious or political thread that will inevitably get closed.

Good luck brother. Have a great trip! My prayers are with you.

Completely agree with you Rhino.

I've been blessed to help out in both South/Central America and here in the states. Some of the biggest differences that I see between there and here is that the amount of poverty is so much greater there then it is here. Also the general level of appreciation is so much greater there as well. When in Peru & Panama the people were so very greatful for what we were doing. However here in the states the people just expected our help. Sure there were some that were truly blessed but most had the attitude of "why should I thank you, your just doing your job".

As for your trip Bass_Fanatic, have fun & be safe. Let us know how it was when you get back.

Have a great trip Bass_fanatic!

Why do Churches go overseas to help folks when there are people in their own communities who need help? Well, we use the model of the New Testament, where Jesus tells us to be His witnesses in Jerudalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the utter most parts of the earth. That's kind of like saying, "Help those in your county, in your state, in your country, and all over the world." One of the cool benefits of going on a missions trip is that young folks, who have never helped anybody do anything, will gladly go thinking it's just going to be a vacation. But, when they get there, and have the experience of helping folks, it fires them up, and they help folks in the community when they get home.

Also, J Franco has a point. Before you can help someone in the states you've got to get written permission, get them to sign wavers that if somehthing goes wrong they won't sue you, etc. But, overseas, you just show up and work.

Anyway, if you don't like the fact that ***atic is leaving the country to help others, I'd like to offer a suggestion as to how you can protest. Tomorrow morning, get a rake and go clean up some old lady's yard in your neighborhood. That'll teach 'em! :D

Charity begins at home. Just saying.

Define "home". Is it just family? Does it spread to neighbors, your community, your state, your country, the world?

I think it's a pretty low class thing to take a shot at a guy helping someone else. If you are that concerned about it, tell us what you're going to do to help.

As I sit at my desk at work and ponder about the thousands of ways to completely DESTROY this post of yours, i have come to the conclusion that it is probably best to just quote you again just in case anyone missed this highly intelligent comment of yours based upon something you were most likely discussing at your latest MENSA meeting, and not completely rip you apart and probably get the thread locked, my post deleted, and possibly a ban for a week or more, and take away the positives of the OP's comment on helping others.

You know, I think I'm growing.

I agree with what Rhino said. Helping your fellow man is the most important thing.

The Haitian adults have no prospects and the children there live in deplorable poverty in some areas.

The natural disasters took an already poor country and leveled it.

There are programs in place here in the USA that help the less fortunate, but over there, there is only the religious outreach of the churches making a difference on a continuing basis.

Have a safe trip to Haiti.

Awesome job Fanatic. I cannot believe some people have the nerve to attempt to criticize you for going somewhere to help people. I have never heard a person that volunteers his/her time to help the less fortunate locally complain about someone else doing the same in another country that needs them even more. It is safe to say that still stands... no way those questioning your loyalty are frequent volunteers for the poor and broken, otherwise they'd have a heck of a lot more compassion.

Well said P4Bass... I would say the Fanatic is building his treasure elsewhere and setting a great example for those around him.

In no way was I trying to take away from what he is doing. I'm happy he is helping others that need it. I was just stating that there are people here, that need help also. I in no way said he should not go do what he feels he is being lead to do. If it came across that way then I apologize.

I just don't see the reason why we as Americans always rush to fix the problems of the rest of the world when we have are own here. If that makes me a bad person then so be it. If people want to go help others in other countries, fine, more power to them. It just seems to me that all you ever here about is going to help in _________(insert country here), and not that much about what people do or are doing on the home front. Again if wanting to take care of the people in America makes me a bad guy, hate monger, inhuman, careless being. Then so be it I'll wear that badge with pride.

If someone cares to shed some light on that for me (without attacking me), I would be more than happy to hear the reasoning behind it.

Touching a life, any life regardless of where they live is special. He's not just giving his finances, he's giving his time. Have a blessed and safe trip and let me/us know you got home. Prayers sent !
