i was wondering if anyone has used this and does it really work on gut hooked fish..i have unfortunatly gut hooked a few bass this year and can't seem to get the hook out through the gills.....

havent used that specific one,there are many styles and brands of these.but yea they work...a good pair of forceps works great to,and those could be had for free if you know some one in the medical field or a paramedic/firefighter.

And, it works flawlessly.  I never miss a chance to plug the technique.  It is unquestionably the most valuable thing I have ever learned about fishing.

If you can get the curved jaw large hemostat (7 1/2"- 8" length), it is way better for hook removal than the one Bill Dance uses. The curved style is better than the straight and handles all hook positions.

I bought a pair and ended up returning them. Didnt work any better than a set of longnose pliers IMO.

I bought one a few months ago. They are not the DO ALL - END ALL. But a valuable tool none-the-less. I use hemo-stats when fly fishing (best I've found for that) and used needle nosed pliers for the last several years when bass fishing, but about every six months or so I found that the jaws on the pliers were sprung. So now I use the BD type when beating the bank and the pliers & the BD style when in the boat. I think it goes with what you can afford and are comfortable with.

in the day, tweezers worked just as well.

but for the gut hooked,

the gill tech. explained on this site works about 99% of the time for me.

I used the technique the other day. I was fishing for pan fish so obviously using a smaller hook when a bass took the bait and swallowed most of the hook.  There wasn't a lot of shank showing and the bass wasn't real big.  I had to use the pliers carefully through the gill because I couldn't get my fingers through there. But I got the hook turned and it came right out. I didn't like using the pliers through the gill but I figured it was still better than leaving the hook in there.

I've seen his show where he says that thing is "Handier than a pocket on a shirt (I thought that's why they put pockets on pants!)" but I've never seen him actually use it.
