lavbasser Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 I have had an ongoing problem with my Steez baitcasters. If temps are below 50 and it is raining the anti-reverse will begin to fail after an hour or so of fishing. The handle will intermittently spin backwards on hooksets or anytime I rip baits from grass. It happened today while I was fishing. Once it starts to fail I obviously can not use the reel. This evening I removed the sideplate and spool. They are drying out in a spare bedroom. The reels will work fine tomorrow. Does anyone else have this problem? Daiwa was unbable to correct the problem in the past and I have not had good experiences with their service dept. Thanks. Lou Quote
bigbassctchr101 Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 Sounds to me like the AR bearings have the wrong type of lubrication on them. In colder temps this may cause it to not work correctly. If you are able to clean out and service your reels often, I only run hot sauce oil with only a very small amount of hot sauce grease in the AR's. In the winter I have the time to service my reels a lot. It may not be needed, but I only use oil over all my reels (except for small amounts on reel gears and worm gears). DVT or JFrncho would probably be able to answer why and what to do better. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 Sounds like the AR is improperly lubed and/or dirty. 50* isn't that much of a temp change but it depends what's in there. The AR bearing/clutch should be flushed, allowed to dry thoroughly and oiled with a light oil applied with a swab to avoid over lubing. If this is something you're not comfortable with, you can send it in and I'll go through the whole thing. Quote

To much oil and or grease is bad for the AR bearing packs it will cause them to fail even in warm weather. Daiwa' service dept is not all that good any more, I have caught them on more than one ocasion adding grease to the AR bearing packs when return from their service. We don't use grease in the AR's any longer. A light oil swab is what is proper now, and the AR should hold in all temp ranges. Send it of to Mike he's got your back. Good Luck & Tight Lines! Quote
Super User J Francho Posted October 28, 2011 Super User Posted October 28, 2011 Another vote for too much gunk in the one way bearing. Quote
lavbasser Posted October 28, 2011 Author Posted October 28, 2011 Thank you all for the help. Mike is going to take a look at them. Quote
