NoBassPro Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 I mainly fish weedy natural lakes. For me, about the only time I use jigs is if I'm fishing around docks or pads but would like to try out some other presentations. So, what jigs have you guys used that come through weeds the best? There are a bunch out there for that purpose that all look the same to me. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted October 27, 2011 Super User Posted October 27, 2011 Strike King Hack Attack Jigs, and Bitsy flips come through the milfoil, coontail, pondweed, and eel grass we have around here very well. OutKast RT jigs are also good. Look for jigs with bullet shaped heads, line ties that are in-line with the hook shank and bent at less of an angle..........if that make sense. Don't be afraid to use heavy jigs too, I like a 3/4- 1oz. jig for most of my weed fishing, unless the water is cold or I am in super shallow water, then I use a 1/2 or 3/8 oz. Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 I use a couple different styles. The first is a bullet style I use Now the second I fish in hydrilla and if you pop the jig it pulls through excellent! This is my Brush Big O Jig Quote
Super User Jigfishn10 Posted October 27, 2011 Super User Posted October 27, 2011 The straighter the line tie comes out of the jig head the easier to get thru the weeds IMHO. GMAN (Siebert Outdoors), just gave you 2 great jigs to try out! Quote
backwater4 Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 X 3 on the bullet or brush, bullet being better in heavier veg. I've also been using a poison tail, which has been pretty good. Quote

Nonsense....a bullet shaped head with a wie gap hook, and a 28 degree straight hook eye hooks fish better than almost any other jig. Give me facts, not a sales pitch. 1 Quote
Super User Jigfishn10 Posted October 29, 2011 Super User Posted October 29, 2011 I'll have to agree with ww2farmer. The person working the jig has more to do with hook-ups than the jig itself, IMHO. I have no problems with most grass/flipping jigs that are currently produced. Quote

Vinny Chase Posted October 30, 2011 Posted October 30, 2011 North Star makes a grass jig head that is EXCELLENT. I fish the same situations as you and I almost never get hung up. Quote

X2 However, more important than the head design is the knot. A knot with a tag end that sticks out even a little will drag in more vegetation than the head design ever will. Tie a good knot, have faith in it, and clip the tag end SHORT. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted October 31, 2011 Super User Posted October 31, 2011 When I pick up weeds I like to take up the slack in the line and give the rod a quick sideways jerk. The jig usually comes right out of the weeds unless its snotgrass, and it usually works with any type of jig. Quote
River Rat316 Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 bullet shaped heads do not hook very well. perfect strike tackle alpha jig is a great jig for swimming or fishing through any cover. it also has better hooking technology. I am going to call BS on this one, like already stated alot of the hooking percentage has to do with the fishermans mechanics, and I suppose if the fish had wooden lips that only went straight up and down your statement might be true but in the real world this is not the case. If anything a "bullet" shaped head might be the best shape for hookup percentages, the head itself comes out of the mouth easier, not opening the mouth like a football or arky shaped head. I have an unreal hookup percentage with grass and swim jigs, way higher than anyother style of jig actually. SO while test scenarios are always a good starting place keep in mind that things vary in the real world, if your test was at all accurate no one would ever hook a fish with a single weedguard and regular head. 1 Quote
BassThumb Posted November 1, 2011 Posted November 1, 2011 I personally think that the right rod is as important, if not more important, than the right jig head. A rod with enough power in the tip 12" will be able to pop just about any jig free of weeds, even football heads. Generally, any kind of bullet shaped head on a stout rod will work just fine in the weeds. Quote
A-Rob Posted November 27, 2011 Posted November 27, 2011 I like terminator jigs but I only get 1/2 of them with a sharp hook! When they are good, they're good. Strike king premier denny brauer whatevers are good for me with a rounded head even (not sure why, I just have no problem with them in grass) I will also fish booyah jigs and have no problem with them either. These are also cheap and easy to throw in rough areas without worrying about losing the $$ Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted November 27, 2011 Super User Posted November 27, 2011 Hmm...You need a new jig. Try GMAN and NorthStar, I have NEVER had a bad hook. Quote
Hamby Posted November 28, 2011 Posted November 28, 2011 Strike king premier denny brauer whatevers are good for me with a rounded head even (not sure why, I just have no problem with them in grass) I haven't fished with many mass produced jigs that you'd find in a store. I find that hand-tied by guys like gman and northstar are often far superior in quality and consistency. But i will mention that i bought a handful of the premier denny brauer ones on clearance and they are absolute crap. No idea how you can recommend those. Skirts were cheap, hooks rusted within a day and dulled easily...overall crap for me. Just wanted to add my 2 cents on that jig since you mentioned it. Wanna know the best part about guys like gman and northstar? The exact question in the original post could be emailed to them and they would likely answer it quickly and recommend a jig. On topic: I like a bullet style grass jig or anything sold as a swim jig is excellent also. Quote

But I can't recommend that one as unless you drive up here you won't be getting it. I have seen 2 Denny Brauer jigs. One rusts out and sucks. The other one is a gama or mustad hook and is OK (OK as in not great not bad)....Sorry I didn't mean to lead you a stray Quote
A-Rob Posted November 30, 2011 Posted November 30, 2011 Hmm...You need a new jig. Try GMAN and NorthStar, I have NEVER had a bad hook. You are right. I have a local handmade jig that is much better. Did not mention it b/c it's local to me (ontario, canada) which doesn't help anyone else out haha Quote
JIGFISHERMAN. Posted November 30, 2011 Posted November 30, 2011 I use the Darter jigs from Lure Craft (poor boys). They are less than a buck each, and then I paint them, and tie my own skirts. I use them for everything including wood, except rock. http://www.lurecraft.com/catalog.cfm/lead-products/darter-jig-head:2273 No affiliation. Quote
