Shane Procell Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 I had heard scattered reports of an occasional snakehead being caught in Palm Beach County. Using Google Earth, I found a canal and a boat ramp that looked promiseing. After the long drive north I got to the ramp only to see it was marked "No Tresspassing" by the sheriff dept. I scrambled on the phone a got a tip from a friend of another launch near by. We started fishing right at the launch. No signs of snakeheads after 45 minutes. Then I had a quick glimpse of a strikeing snakehead. Soon after it was on like donky kong. Monster hookups for several hours. These were consistantly in the 5# plus range and the biggest was 9# even. Iam still amazed at how quick these invasive species are spreading. I can honestly see the day in the next 20 years where the entire south end of Florida (from Tampa to Daytona and south to the keyes) will be covered up with snakeheads. We need help killing the snakeheads! If any of yall want to drag your boat south, i'll gladly provide areas that need some snake wranglers. Quote

Shane Procell Posted October 31, 2011 Author Posted October 31, 2011 They are everywhere. Just start throwing and walking. Use Google earth to find your boat ramps. The more obscure and out of the way...the better. Quote
Trever Posted November 1, 2011 Posted November 1, 2011 We eat them and give alot to families who like but cannot afford fresh fish. Thats awesome man! good for you! Is it a good tasting fish? Quote
Shane Procell Posted November 1, 2011 Author Posted November 1, 2011 For guaranted snakes hit the Hillsborough and C-14 canals. These canals both have good ramps and plenty of fish. Use Google earth to pinpoint the ramps. In C-14 you will find minor canals that have neighborhoods on them...these are where I would start. Hillsborough canal is straight and no minor canals. Head west and fish back to the ramp. Quote
Michael Adler Posted August 20, 2021 Posted August 20, 2021 I stay near Forest Hill and 95 and fish on foot. I want to catch and eat snakeheads. I tried going south last week because I heard Broward was the place to be. So many "no trespassing" & "tow away" signs and guard booths that it was hard to find a spot. I tried quiet waters Park for a while and no bites, plus I was concerned about being so close to the landfill. I found some small retention ponds near the doubletree on Hillsborough blvd and no bites there either. I'd like to drive less far if possible. I wonder if I should just do the local canals I've caught cichlids in for decades, but want something with high probability. A couple years ago I tried the big canal by the home depot on Southern and 441, from where it goes into the C-51 along in back of home depot and around the curve back to along 441. I got one bite in a little retention pond next to home depot that wouldn't repeat, and no bites in the canal. I've been throwing a soft plastic frog, dark color, weedless double hook. I don't get many days I can go and it's no fun getting skunked. I keep hearing about how easy this is and everyone loading up on them. I want to join that club. I'd really appreciate some advice on good spots with safe parking nearby, and also technique. I'm great at catching cichlids on bread balls but not great at any other kind of fishing. Thanks! Quote
