fool4fishn Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 I love fishing spinners,Jigs and Chatterbaits but have had problems with the skirts flying apart on some. As replacements I have used Quickskirts and other one piece replacements. They dont seem to have the same flair as ones that are tied. My question is what is the best thread and sealer to use on hand tied skirts, I dont want to use the bands because they dry-rot after 1/2 season of use. Thanks in advance. Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 20-24 gauge copper wire from Hobby Lobby. I dont use thread. Wrap the wire around twice and snug up with some needle nose pliers. It wont come off again. Quote
Super User Jigfishn10 Posted October 24, 2011 Super User Posted October 24, 2011 Size C or D rod builders thread and clear nail polish to seal. Quote

cadman Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 You will get a lot of answers here, depends on whether you want to wire tie or tie with thread. I tie with thread and use Coats and Clarks upholstery thread in black, brown, white and beige. You will never ever break it. For colored thread I use big fly U+W thread. I seal with Sally Hansen's clear nail polish. Quote
tholmes Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 I've never tried it with silicone skirts, but for bucktail I use size D rod wrapping thread and clear vinyl paint (thinned 50/50) for sealer. Tom Quote

fool4fishn Posted October 28, 2011 Author Posted October 28, 2011 Thanks for the input from everybody. I will try both, wire and thread and see what I like. Just got my tying vise in, time to get started. Thanks again !!! Quote
BigMatt Posted November 5, 2011 Posted November 5, 2011 I use 26 gauge wire. Not much smaller than 24, but I can work with it easier and get it tied the way I like to. I usually take a piece about 4" long and wrap around the jig four or five times then twist the ends together and clip the excess off. I have never had a skirt come undone once I started doing it like this. But, as one has said already above, everyone has their own way of doing this and no one way is absolutely right. You just have to find what you like to work with. Have fun. Quote
Super User Munkin Posted November 6, 2011 Super User Posted November 6, 2011 Just leave the band on the bait and tie right in front of it. Afterwards you can remove the band if you want but a lot of the time I just leave it on there. Allen Quote
JIGFISHERMAN. Posted November 11, 2011 Posted November 11, 2011 I use superbraid to tie my jigs. I have a few spools I don't use, all 80lb. I trim the tag ends with really sharp scissors, and add some clear nail polish to the threads. Been making them this way for a few years now. Quote
