Super User SirSnookalot Posted October 27, 2011 Super User Posted October 27, 2011 I made a knock-off of it a few minutes ago. Took me about 5 minutes to put it together. Cost less than $6 for the parts. My dad and I 60 years ago used a contraption like that with 2 arms, a fish spreader, for perch and silver bass, live bait set up. Quote
philsoreel Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 I'd use it in a tournament as long as it's legal. Quote
Super User Sam Posted October 27, 2011 Super User Posted October 27, 2011 I think it is ridiculous. If I did not know better I would think it was a joke. Maybe for live bait but I can't see it for artificials. If I saw someone throwing this rig I would make fun of them. I would think the rig would scare the fish away, other than for bream and catfish. I think this is a fad and it will go away. Of course, if you put a Banjo Minnow on each rod you may catch a bass. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted October 27, 2011 Super User Posted October 27, 2011 That rig is going thru the same panic buying like the Chatterbait did when is was used to win several tournaments a few years ago. There were 7 offered for sale on another web site for $1,000.00 or $160.00 each. On the same site, a couple were available for $200.00 each then the price was dropped to $150.00 each. Quote

Robert M Kelsey Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 I won this lure at the Grays All Nighter and thought here is a lure I will never use. Boy was I wrong I have used it a few times and love the Action the Flukes have while retreveing it. I havent caught anything with it as of yet but i am still learning it. I have a tournament with our club Sat. on Wilson lake here in Alabama and hope to use it. If only i was clued in on some good spots on Wilson i usually fish PickWick Lake. Just getting back into Fishing after a 5 year run of GoKart Racing with my son Quote

Super User Dwight Hottle Posted October 27, 2011 Super User Posted October 27, 2011 I don't see how you could cast it without tangles. The only way to fish it would be trolling or drift fishing to minimize tangles. Most bass tournamnets ban trolling. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted October 27, 2011 Super User Posted October 27, 2011 You spread the wires to prevent them from tangling. The baits are just paddletails on open hook jigheads. Quote

As others have mentioned above, that's just a variation on an umbrella, in open water schooling fish, will catch as many as you have hooks. Pointless around grass. The painted fish head is cute, and I guess it MUST be thrown with flouro, cause the coat hanger becomes magically invisible in the water (shouldn't it be red?) I love how LMB guys think their fishing is different than just fishing. Maybe a spinnerbait on each arm...... Quote

I love how LMB guys think their fishing is different than just fishing. Maybe a spinnerbait on each arm...... I think the setups used in the Gunbersville tournament were all swimbaits, all spinnerbaits, and all grubs. The swimbaits and grubs were on different weight jig heads depending on the depth and retrieve speed. 80-100# braid is used and a very heavy action rod to handle the weight. The Everstart event (happening now) has Tennesse restrictions on the presentation that only allows for three lures with hooks on them. That leaves two of the snapswivels empty or with "teasers" on them. A willowleaf spinnerbait blade would make a good "teaser" application. Quote
Super User SoFlaBassAddict Posted October 28, 2011 Super User Posted October 28, 2011 I just noticed this post SirSnook and imediately thought the same thing. I just finished a post on a similar thread In the General Bass Fishing Forum saying it was a saltwater rig making it's way to freshwater prior to viewing your post. That's the first thing that came to my mind as well. I saw the picture and instantly thought of the umbrella rigs that are hanging up in my garage. Oh, if anybody wants to send me a ridiculous amount of money, I'll make one or two for you. . Just need to downsize them a bit from the ones I use for offshore trolling....... Quote
Super User deep Posted October 28, 2011 Author Super User Posted October 28, 2011 in open water schooling fish, will catch as many as you have hooks.. I suppose you think catching actively feeding schooling fish is easy? Ever tried it? I have, and it can be very hit or miss. After you've tried it, and caught a bass every cast with a conventional bait, try fishing for suspended schooling fish; and let us know how you do. I've never tried this A-rig, and nor do I think I will in the near future. But we gotta understand it's just a tool, albeit a pretty radical one, if I may say so. There's no magic bait, but who knows what turns a school of bass on? No need to look down upon any technique just because it's new and unconventional. Quote

Super User Wayne P. Posted October 29, 2011 Super User Posted October 29, 2011 A couple of home-made ones up on ebay too. $30 a pop. Hey Deep, they are easy to make. I put this one together this morning after going to Walmart to get some small swimbaits. I make it with a center wire that is just a little longer than the other 4. The total weight of this one is about 1 oz. Heavier and larger baits can be used with it. Quote

I don't have any fishing scenario to use the Alabama rig in right now; and I certainly am not going to spend $30 on something that I myself can make. Maybe I'll make myself a few rigs over the winter for use in summer 2012. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted October 30, 2011 Super User Posted October 30, 2011 Deep, the conditions at Sandy River Res., Lake Anna, Buggs Island, etc are good now for that presentation. It could be good for Briery Creek also except it would be just an anchor there, LOL. I'll be dunking it at Sandy River next week to find out. Quote

I only wish I could go out and fish one of those places. Heck, I wish I could go out and fish even my local lake right now. I managed to go out only twice in the last seven weeks Let us know how you do with the A-rig. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted October 30, 2011 Super User Posted October 30, 2011 The owner/inventor has been winning tournaments with the rig. I fished Make-A-Wish out of McFarland Harbor (Florence, AL) a couple of weeks ago. The Alabama Rig won that tournament, too. The A-rig was responsible for the win (Dan Moorehead) at the Everstart event today. Most of the top ten were using it. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted October 31, 2011 Super User Posted October 31, 2011 Some local results..... I got a chance to try out my home made version Saturday (Oct 29th) on Oneida Lake at the KTBA Stone Cold Team event. I fished with CUS and the area we were in had a lot of floating surface weeds' date=' but when I had a few open casting lanes I tried it out and I caught four fish on it and lost one double. Two of those four were cull fish for us and we won the event and took lunker. I fished it with 1/8 oz 4" grubs on 14 lb BPS XPS Floro , TFO 704-1 MH rod, and a US Reel 810 (6.55:1 ratio) it worked just fine and I didn't need 60-100 lb braid either. Of course I'm only fishing for 3- 6 lb class fish, so I imagine that allows for the use of lighter line. [img']http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r267/BurnieHaney/Burnie2SMB.jpg CUS was back at it on Oneida Lake Sunday and I left my home made rig with him. He reports catching 12 fish on it and he took second place in that tournament. I heard reports that a couple of teams around him were asking for a rig... Sorry boys that was Burnie's original proto-type and that's a 1st and 2nd place finish, back-to-back, on opposite ends of the lake... so I dare say this rig works.  This coming Saturday I'll put it through the paces for some St Lawrence River smallies. This rig is the real deal for catching suspended schoolers and I have no doubt if the bass are relating to bait balls it will work no matter what water you're fishing. I hit fish in 48-51 degree water, so I can only imagne how well it will work on summer time fish. Remember to always check the angling regulations for your waters... before you cast. And don't forget a good bites where you find it :peace: Quote
NoBassPro Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 I will admit, I hope they outlaw this rig in tournaments. To me it seems more like something to be used for meat hunting than sport fishing. Quote

Super User Deleted account Posted October 31, 2011 Super User Posted October 31, 2011 Take a deep breath.....maybe if we describe it as a spinnerbait/donkey rig hybrid technique, we can incorporate it into the power fishing spectrum within an open water moving bait pattern. I'll say again: I love how LMB guys think their fishing is different than just fishing. 1 Quote
