Surf was calm and water was super clear. I knew it's going to be tough. Started with JB90 for half an hour not a bump. Switched to 3" BH swimbait for another half an hour salf results not a nibble. Went for a desperate move switched to a dropshot for an hour but nobody's home. We'll since it was lake like condition I thought maybe try for topwater lure. Tied on Zaro Spook JR and after the fifth cast something jumps out and lo and behold my first topwater halibut!!! :o

It was a shorty but I was so stoked and it felt better than catching a legal halibut using sub surface lures ! :D

Are there seasonal bait runs in the Pacific?

Top lures are fun when it's calm, fishing is better when it's rough. I use top lures quite bit in surf up to 4ft, you may not always see the strike, but it's very effective.

Sweet! Ugly looking fish  . Nice catch. Did you tie feathers on that back hook? Sure looks like it..

Yes, tied feathers on it for additional flash.

We do have a grunion(bait fish) run between March to August here in Southern California. It happens twice a month during New moon and Full moon. Grunion actually beach themselves to mate and bury their eggs in the sand.
