I was in Cabelas the other day having some line added to a reel when I noticed they had the New Smoke Spinning reel on display. I asked a salesman to let me see the reel and wow it is the lightest reel I have ever had in my hands. It's right in there with the Daiwa Steez and the Shimano offerings. Just not nearly as expensive as the Daiwa and still less than the Shimano offerings as well. I'm going to be adding this and one other Quantum reel to my arsenal in the spring and can't want to hit the water with them.

im curious if quatnum has made any changes to the anti-reverse on their spinning reels. i have heard a few other instances where they fail. i used my brother-in-laws catalyst 20 pti-b some last fall, and when the reel got cold, the anti reverse failed about 95% of the time, made it hard to catch anything on it. it had and still has no problems when its warm out, but in the cold it didnt perform at all.

just a curiostiy of mine, the newer quantums look nice, and love that they made the exo and smoke much lighter than the previous models. just dont know if i would buy one if the anti-reverse wont work in the cold

(btw i live in wisconsin so about half my fishing season is in colder weather)

I live in il and fish in the cold also and never had that problem happen with my Catalyst PTi-20 A or B. Someone else talked about a similar situation and the reel needed a good cleaning and correct oiling to have the anti reverse function properly.

I'm probably going out on a limb here, but I don't understand this general fascination with super-light reels. I mean unless you're mounting it on an NRX or a Steez or something - and most of us aren't I guess- isn't the overall combo going to get more & more tip-heavy with a lighter reel?

Enlighten me about the superiority of the economically priced super-light reels over the $100 range Shimanos that I use.. Not a sarcasm, because I can get some of those super-light non-Shimano reels NIB at 50% off, but never actually tried them out, no kidding.

The reel will either be mounted on a Cabelas Xmlti or custom ALX rod of which both are extremely light rods. From what I understand most rods are tip heavy without a reel mounted but once the reel is mounted its where the rod balances out that determines if its tip heavy. Sure DVT can give a better answer as well. The reel actually felt good in my hands and thats why I mentioned it. Also with a lure mounted and position or way hold your rod/reel combo can make a difference as well.

That XMLTI is a great rod. I don't own one, but I've store-fished one, once. Nice choice.

I wasn't trying to pick on your rod/ reel choice. I apologize if you think I came across like that. I was just asking a general question.

Actually, I think I went pretty much off-topic. Sorry for the hijack!

It's ok deep and no I didn't think you were talking bout my rod or reel choice at all. I think you asked a legimate question and don't think you highjacked the thread at all.

Actually, I think my original post was pretty abrasive. I'm really sorry about that.

Thanks for the apology and not a problem at all.

Well if a person looks outside the bass-box where the normal rod power is MH and looks at other fishing types that use L, ML, or even UL and in Moderate action the rods get much lighter and a 7.4oz reel can make a 6'6" ML Mod rod butt heavy. Now yeah you can go to a smaller physical size reel but that creates other issues - line management less drag power. If they make lighter reel at the same spool size, drag power that is a win-win not butt heavy or tiny spool line coiler.

There are UL specialists out there that use UL equipment for bass fishing so this is just one area that comes to my mind about lighter reels.
